Moreover, we recognize the interconnectedness of these two contexts.We strive to engage in solidarity with and build bridges between the Original Peoples’ (Pueblos Originarios) organizations and communities with whom we work in Guatemala, and the Indigenous communities in whose territories we are situated in the Maritimes. We recognize the ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities in both these contexts.Our work is guided by a commitment to equity and opposing systemic oppression, as well as building long-term relationships based on solidarity and mutuality. We respond to partner needs and as such, we respond jointly with our organizational partners in Guatemala. Our relationships are built on friendship, sharing, and dialogue as we work, learn, unlearn, and grow together.In order to carry out this work, we are seeking a creative and thoughtful Maritimes Coordinator with a deep commitment to and passion for solidarity with Guatemala. This person will support BTS solidarity work, primarily in the Maritimes, and, on occasion, elsewhere in Canada and in Guatemala. This person will be flexible and self-motivated with strong time-management skills, excellent interpersonal and written communications skills and a demonstrated interest in community engagement. As the person works with a Community Council and committees, all of which are volunteer-based, they must be able to work without a great deal of direction, and be willing to meet with volunteers during evenings and weekends, as needed.The successful candidate will coordinate BTS’s priority areas of work in Canada, including:Helping to formulate and support the network’s advocacy and solidarity initiativesSupporting and animating BTS Local Committees in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. This will require regular travel throughout the year to meet with Local Committees.Creating effective communications within the BTS Network and with Guatemala partnersCollaborating with other BTS staff, the BTS Community Council (CC), local, and working committeesCandidate QualitiesThe candidate will:

• Have excellent program coordination skills and experience
• Have strong facilitation skills and experience
• Have (at minimum) intermediate Spanish language skills (spoken and written)
• Be located in the Maritimes
• Be able to work remotely, with reliable access to computer, phone, and internet (BTS has no office space)
• Have a driver’s license (or be able to make travel arrangements that respond to the flexible nature of the work.) Be willing and able to travel regionally, nationally, and internationally:
• Regular, frequent travel throughout the Maritimes for 1-7 days at a time
• Occasional travel (max 2 times per year) for meetings with BTS-related organizations within Canada (beyond the Maritimes) for 2-3 days at a time
• Make one annual trip to Guatemala for a period of 3-6 weeks, to develop relationships with BTS

Guatemala Coordinator and Guatemalan partners and to deepen understanding of the Guatemalan context. This may also at times include co-leadership of delegations with the Guatemala Coordinator, although this role is often carried out by a BTS volunteer. Additional trips may be required occasionally in order to respond to specific needs.In general, the successful candidate should:

• Share BTS’s commitment to our work and philosophy
• Have an understanding of historical and current social, cultural, and economic context of Guatemala
• Have a strong analysis of and depth of experience in resisting the ongoing impacts of colonialism and structures of oppression in Canada and Guatemala
• Have a demonstrated interest in global human rights and social justice
• Have developed and guided advocacy initiatives and campaigns
• Have the flexibility necessary to coordinate work schedules with the Guatemala Coordinator and BTS volunteers when needed
• Work well independently and also as part of a team
• Have strong writing skills and experience writing funding applications, as well as writing for newsletters and website-type content
• Have experience using Mailchimp, Canva, and MS Publisher (or other newsletter/ report design programs) and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
• Be able to use or learn WordPress website design and updating

Detailed Job DescriptionThe Maritimes Coordinator will: Take the lead on guiding the outreach and advocacy of the BTS network. They will do this by:

• Staying updated about current events in Guatemala which impact BTS’s partners
• Organizing speaking tours with Guatemalan partners and friends in the Maritimes together with the Guatemala Coordinator and Local Committees, including follow-up actions. This requires a willingness to travel throughout the Maritimes with Guatemalan guests
• Representing and taking action on behalf of BTS in a variety of advocacy networks and strategic working groups, including: Atlantic Council for International Cooperation, the International Coalition Against Unjust Mining in Guatemala, Canadian Network on Corporate Accountability, Americas Policy Group and others as necessary
• Engaging with Maritimes-based Members of Parliament on issues related to the work of BTS and partners in Guatemala
• Coordinating solidarity and advocacy work in Canada on issues reflecting BTS’s priority areas - defense of territory; truth, justice and impunity; and human security (with gender as a cross-cutting theme in all priority areas) or other issues that staff see as important in consultation with the Community Council and with other groups in Canada

Help promote the engagement, growth, diversity and resilience of the Maritimes Network. They will do this by:

• Providing support for and animation of local committees, including attending at least two meetings per year with each local committee (at least one of which should be outside of tour times), with a focus on advocacy, sharing of the Guatemalan context, and member engagement
• Along with the Guatemala Coordinator, updating the network on current events in Guatemala relative to BTS’s priority areas through email listserv and social media
• Keeping in regular touch with local committees, updating them on partners, Guatemala situational analyses etc.
• Supporting BTS’s internal anti-oppression work, for example acting as liaison with an anti-oppression consultant and BTS Anti-oppression Advisory Committee

Take the lead in supporting summer students, in collaboration with the BTS Cooperant Committeewhenever the students’ roles are Maritimes-focussed. They will do this by:

• Orienting the students to BTS
• Supervising their work with regular check-ins
• Doing a regular reflection process with them, and helping them deepen learnings about solidarity work

Take the lead on communications with the network. They will do this by:

• Ensuring regular communication within the BTS Network by creating and disseminating the Annual Report and monthly bulletins (or when necessary), urgent actions, social media updates, and through the listserv. The person will be responsible for the administration of list membership
• Working with the BTS Guatemala Coordinator to communicate BTS and partners’ work in Guatemala by regularly updating BTS social media, website and blog, including writing original content when necessary and possible
• Keeping abreast of parallel struggles in Mi’kma’ki and Canada, disseminating information and solidarity requests through social media, blog, and listserv
• Responding to emails, making presentations and generally representing the BTS network in Canada

Work closely with the BTS Community Council, BTS working committees and Tatamagouche Centre. They will do this by:

• Monitoring budgets, reporting to the BTS Finance Committee and supporting BTS Fundraising Committee work
• Submitting expenses monthly to Tatamagouche Centre and the BTS Finance Committee
• Attending in-person Community Council meetings (bi-annual), and occasional additional CC meetings by phone, Zoom, etc.
• Developing a working relationship with Tatamagouche Centre staff
• Working with the Annual Gathering Planning Committee (support with communications and logistics)

Have a strong working relationship with the BTS staff in Guatemala. They will do this by:

• Having regular (weekly/bi-weekly) meetings with BTS staff in Guatemala
• Actively participating in at least one facilitated face-to-face meeting with the Guatemala Coordinator per year
• Developing semi-annual work plans with the Guatemala Coordinator and Community Council to fulfill the mission and vision of the network.

Promote cross-cultural learning and opportunities to deepen solidarity relationships through delegations to Guatemala, hosting Guatemalan guests to the Maritimes and at times to other parts of Canada, and supporting the Cooperant Program. They will do this by:

• Working with the Guatemala Coordinator in the coordination of logistics and planning of delegations/speaking tours in Canada. This may include coordinating speaking tours of Guatemalans, ensuring orientation of guests on arrival in the Maritimes, working with BTS Local Committees and others to identify venues for meetings, billets, co-sponsoring or meeting with appropriate local counterparts (e.g.: indigenous groups, labour groups, university classes, churches), finding interpreters, accompanying the Guatemalan guest on the speaking tour
• Organizing the Canadian components of BTS delegation to Guatemala with attention to the BTS equity and diversity policy. This includes developing and disseminating delegation announcements several months in advance to recruit participants, coordinating and facilitating pre-departure trainings and debrief sessions with participants in Canada
• Possibly working with the Guatemala Coordinator from time to time in the leadership of delegations in Guatemala
• Working with the Cooperant Program Committee in supporting program development, publicity and recruitment, training in the Maritimes, supervision of Maritimes-based cooperants and summer students, when needed and appropriate
