Job Description

Job TitleCompliance SpecialistJob DescriptionOverview:Reporting to the Director, Regulatory & Scientific Affairs, the Compliance Specialist will support regulatory compliance and risk management initiatives, including the internal audit program, continuous improvement and CAPA initiatives. The Compliance Specialist will support compliance with requirements under the Cannabis Act, SOX, and other customer and brand standards to support a risk-based compliance program. This individual will be required to perform internal audits, support external audits, and coordinate execution of corrective actions in response to audit observations; and they will support execution of the supplier management program including assessment of supplier quality systems, supplier approval, new product approval and identification of internal controls. The Compliance Associate will collaborate with peers to support a culture of Compliance throughout the organization, including leading education and training initiatives.Main Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a strong understanding of all applicable regulatory requirements including the Cannabis Act and Regulations, Excise Act, Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), provincial legislation, regulation and guidance, and municipal requirements and interpret these requirements in the context of Sundial’s business activities
  • Collaborate with leaders and teams to plan, scope, and execute internal audits, supplier audits, as well as compliance and risk management projects
  • Analyze findings and observations, draw appropriate conclusions, and make recommendations based on both technical guidance and professional judgment
  • Nurture relationships throughout all levels of the organization to gather appropriate information and understand the business requirements to develop effective compliance risk management processes
  • Coordinate with external auditors and other key stakeholders to support policy development initiatives, manage audit plan efforts and maintain documentation supporting execution of corrective actions and continuous improvement projects
  • Support risk management efforts and maintain risk registry
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives; provide education and background on regulatory requirements and the application of compliance with such requirements, provide feedback from gap assessments, audits, and inspections to make recommendations for improvement, support effectiveness evaluations of completed actions
Knowledge and Experience:
  • 3+ years’ experience in a regulatory/quality compliance role or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1+ years’ experience in an auditing role or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Post-secondary education, preferably in a scientific discipline
  • Knowledge of the Cannabis Act and Food and Drug Act
  • Has a solid understanding of cannabis operations
  • Demonstrated ability to apply quality risk management principles
  • Experience capturing and documenting complex regulatory requirements and resulting operational impacts, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail while working in an environment that is subject to frequent interruptions, changing priorities, and conflicting deadlines
  • Strong analytical thinking with demonstrated talent for researching, identifying, scrutinizing, improving, and simplifying complex processes.
  • Solid background and understanding of information systems that are key to operations
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problem prevention opportunities
  • Ability to thrive while working both independently and collaboratively within a team environment is essential
  • Exceptional self-management and organizational skills
