There are many reasons to join Olds College and build a meaningful career in a community that is innovative, diverse and welcoming.About the OpportunityThe Health and Safety Business Partner is responsible for coordinating the management and support of health and safety (H&S) responsibilities across all areas of the College.The role is responsible for ensuring the consistent application of workplace health and safety practices and will coach and mentor our community to enhance our safety culture. You will be a trusted resource and subject matter expert for all thing’s health and safety-related, acting as first point of contact.Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources, the incumbent of this position builds, develops and oversees all H&S programs and will work in collaboration with the H&S Coordinator and the Human Resource team to maintain, improve and support the College’s H&S needs.Key Job Functions:

  • Build and maintain credible relationships with key stakeholders in the organization through trust, consistency, collaboration, effective communication and result.
  • Develop, implement, manage, audit, and continuously improve the College’s Health and Safety Management System.
  • Develop, draft, format, and edit policies and standard operating procedures related to H&S.
  • Oversee production of codes of practice, safety handbooks, and other informative literature for the campus community.
  • Implement effective training, reporting, and communication strategies and systems that encourage high levels of engagement in safety.
  • Conduct regular gap analyses regarding the Colleges level of compliance with applicable H&S codes, regulations, and legislation. Provide recommendations for improvements and work with stakeholders such as the College’s Faculties and Departments to develop associated action plans.
  • Seeks Champion as proactive safety culture and seek continuous improvement in departmental services to meet or exceed internal and external customer expectations.
  • Works closely with the Manager, HR to develop and monitor the departmental budget.
  • Participate as required on health and safety committees.
  • Acts as a liaison to internal partners (i.e. trades, residence, farm, Deans, etc.) and external organizations (i.e. law enforcement, providers, AEMA, regional VTRA, OH&S Alberta; Alberta Health, Mountain View Region Emergency Management Association and Town of Olds Emergency management team, etc.)
  • In collaboration with the Manager, HR establish H&S department goals and objectives that are consistent with the College’s strategic direction.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to the H&S coordinator on all aspects of safety, particularly with respect to new equipment, processes and procedures, and new legislation as it comes into force.
  • Takes an active lead in the coordination of internal and third-party audits.
  • Assess risk and develop mitigation plans to address any areas of opportunity within the College.
  • Collect, manage, and track all leading and lagging indicator metrics.
  • Develop regular reporting to identify trends, benchmark performance and support evidence-based decision making.
  • Interpret and provide guidance to College leadership for compliance with all applicable policies, legislations, and regulations impacting H&S, and emergency management.
  • Work in partnership with the College community to ensure a consistent professional, and positive approach to the management of H&S.
  • Conducts investigations, or works closely with external agencies to support investigations and resolution of incidents including root-cause analysis and providing probable causes of incidents and recommendations for resolution
  • Ensure that health and safety is proactively taken into consideration, where relevant, at the planning stage of any new project or initiative.
  • Lead the writing and reviewing of technical procedures and standards within area of expertise and communicate findings, recommendations, controls, and actions to the business on industrial hygiene subject matter.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in a related field is required. Relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in health, safety, and emergency management.
  • Ability to adapt, and grow with the Health and Safety portfolio within the College.
  • Professional designation from the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, Board of Certified Safety Professionals, Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists, or American Board of Industrial Hygienists is considered an asset.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, creative problem solving, strong analytical skills, demonstrate tact, diplomacy and persuasion.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate excellent organizational skills
  • Able to deliver on commitments.
  • A strong commitment to customer/client service.
  • strong “technical” background for hazards, assessments, audits, investigations, etc and applicable regulatory knowledge (working knowledge of OHS act, regulations, codes).
