Job Description

Olds College is looking for a Jr. Data Scientist for a three year term. Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI) is the scientifically acclaimed applied research division of Olds College. OCCI works with Olds College Smart Farm (OCSF) to execute research projects, such as development and validation of technologies and management practices that are designed to improve productivity and sustainability of food production. These projects depend on the ability to generate and analyze multiple, high quality datasets within each project, in support of effective agricultural business management decision-making.The Junior Data Scientist is to support OCCI’s applied research programs in crop production, livestock production, environmental stewardship and agricultural technology integration. This position will be responsible for data management, including quality control, analysis, visualization, modeling, and contributing to formal and informal project reports. In addition, this position will provide technical support to field or laboratory-based research activities.Key Job Functions:

  • Actively participate and support OCCI applied research and technology evaluation and development of projects, in a data management and analytics capacity, including statistical analysis.
  • Contribute to efficacy and effectiveness in meeting project obligations, including knowledge transfer, through the creation of dashboards and other data visualization products.
  • Actively participate on various project planning and field teams to gain hands-on experience and accelerate understanding, including relevance.
  • Acquire knowledge about various agricultural practices and techniques used in Alberta, Canada, North America, and globally.
  • Contribute to OCCI information dissemination and communication efforts through the utilization of data visualization tools.
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
  • M.Sc. in data science or engineering, agriculture, environment or related field
  • 1-3 years experience in a data scientist or analyst role
  • Experience with agricultural and environmental research, including involvement on research teams, data collection, ‘big data’ analytics, and stakeholder collaboration is considered a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with modern data science tools such as R, Python, SAS, ArcGIS, and others, is an essential requirement for this position.
  • Experience in creating dashboards and visualization with modern business intelligence and analytics tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, and others.
  • The propensity for critical thinking, effective time management, honesty, integrity, and a strong sense of ethics are considered invaluable to this position.
