There are many reasons to join Olds College and build a meaningful career in a community that is innovative, diverse and welcoming.The OpportunityTechnical Lead, Olds College Smart Farm, 3 year term until June 30, 2025.Olds College Smart Farm Technical Lead is responsible for initiating and managing digital technology integration and operation to ensure Olds College Smart Farm infrastructure efficiently utilizes such technology. The successful candidate effectively supports applied research projects, demonstration activities, and smart farming operations at the college. This position is also required to demonstrate leadership and provide decision-making support with respect to technical infrastructure development on the Smart Farm. In addition, the Technical Lead will serve as a liaison between researchers, academics, IT, and farm team, in synchronizing collaborative, Smart Farm related, digital technology access and utilization. Key Job Functions:

  • Manage the day to day implementation and effective operation of digital technologies on Olds College Smart Farm including, but not limited to: weather stations, soil sensors, wireless communication gateways and nodes, wireless fencing systems, livestock tracking systems, ethernet LAN networks & routing, IP cameras, remote rural internet connectivity technologies, etc.
  • Initiate discussions and solicit decisions related to digital technologies that can be deployed and explored by Olds College Smart Farm, as well as digital technology industry partnerships to pursue, and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Liaise between researchers, academics, IT, and farm teams to optimize collaboration and cooperation between existing college enterprises.
  • Work with the Smart Agriculture Applied Research Manager and other Olds College Centre for Innovation staff to ensure project requirements for Smart Farm digital technology utilization, and data acquisition and storage are met.
  • Work with the deans and faculty members of the various schools at the college to ensure the respective academic programs identify appropriate Smart Farm digital technologies, and adequate data acquisition and storage systems.
  • Manage personnel (technicians and students) involved in Smart Agriculture research projects and activities including assignment of tasks, providing feedback, and staff performance reviews.
  • Provide input on future direction of Smart Agriculture applied research, including technologies or practices to consider, industry partnerships to pursue, and potential opportunities for collaboration.
  • Support the preparation and delivery of extension materials to disseminate relevant results and information stemming from Smart Agriculture applied research projects.
  • Contribute within multidisciplinary teams on a wide range of technically challenging projects.
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
  • Post-secondary degree in agriculture, engineering, instrumentation, or a related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of practical experience in agriculture, engineering, instrumentation or a related field.
  • A strong understanding of Western Canadian agriculture (crop and livestock production).
  • Experience with digital technologies applicable in modern agricultural systems, such as soil sensors, weather stations, telematics, wireless communication protocols, Internet Protocol networking & routing, data analytics/platforms, etc.
  • Experience with data logging and instrumentation configurations, including coding and troubleshooting.
  • Passion for using technology and data to improve productivity and sustainability of Canadian agriculture.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Team player and ability to learn from and share knowledge with others.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Class 5 drivers license
