Job Description

BC Tree Fruits Cooperative is looking for a hard working and experienced Shipper to join our Southern Operations team! The BC Tree Fruits Cooperative is owned by fruit growers throughout the entire Okanagan Valley, employs approximately 500 employees, and operates multiple facilities. Our 300 plus LOCAL grower families work together in the BC Tree Fruits Cooperative as part of a larger community. So if fresh, local, and community driven are important values to you, we would encourage you to consider a career at BC Tree Fruits.The Job:The Shipper is responsible for using a forklift to retrieve product from storage racks based on order and inventory requirements, verify that the product is suitable to ship and load product onto trucks while structuring the load for stability and safety. All duties must be performed in a safe manner to ensure compliance with internal grading standards, government regulations, industry standards, customer requirements and to also ensure both food and worker safety.

  • Adhere to all WSBC regulations and Cooperative safety procedures, including but not limited to:
    • First Aid Procedures
    • WHMIS/GHS Regulations
    • Personal Protective Equipment
    • Lockout Procedures
  • Adhere to all pertinent Food Safe procedures as required and detailed under the Food Safety program and your training.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management within the context of:
    • Follow all shipping policies and procedures set forth by sales and customer requirements and as directed by the shipping supervisor or designated stand in.
    • Obtaining and discussing with the shipping, sales and transportation staff such information as may be necessary to properly prepare orders.
    • Use the relevant inventory management system programs to find and prepare appropriate product for each order.
    • Work with quality control/grade checkers to ensure the fruit assigned to each order is correctly and sufficiently inspected, and possibly perform the inspections themselves if necessary.
    • Stack cartons or supervise the stacking of cartons on to pallets as required to fulfill orders.
    • Print and fill out paperwork for each load (bill of lading, loading report, etc.).
    • Communicate with other forklift drivers to ensure the correct warehousing of packed product and organization of staged product.
    • Keep rack spaces in good manageable order so product is organized and accessible.
    • Communicate with management in a timely fashion regarding the maintenance of shipping equipment and supplies.
    • Receiving of returned fruit and delivered supplies.
    • Communicate effectively with supervisors, sales and transportation staff, maintenance, truck drivers and other coworkers or contractors.
    • Report any malfunctions of equipment.
    • May be required to work overtime at the start or end of shifts, on weekends and statutory holidays.
    • Will be required to cross-train in all locations within this specific classification.
    • Any other duties assigned by management.
The Ideal Candidate:
  • Adhere to all pertinent Food Safe procedures as required and detailed under the Food Safety program and your training.
  • Be willing to submit to periodic proficiency testing as Management deems necessary.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with fellow employees, management and truck drivers.
  • Be able to work with or without direct supervision, individually or part of a team.
  • Possess advanced forklift skills.
  • Be comfortable with using tablets for basic data processing.
  • Organized and able to maintain and keep clear, accurate, and detailed records with legible handwriting.
  • Proven diligence in following all WSBC and Cooperative work safe policies and procedures.
  • Be physically capable to perform all duties as required, including heavy labor such as stacking boxes up to 50lbs in weight for several hours a day.
  • Must be reliable and maintain above average attendance.
  • Must be able to perform tasks to the required standards.
  • Must be able to work all shifts, including AM / PM and weekends, 8 hour or 10 hour shifts, as required.
  • Must be comfortable working with and around machinery in a team environment.
  • Have a positive attitude and keen attention to detail.
  • 1+ years of experience in shipping preferable.
  • May be required to work overtime depending on shipping needs.
