SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIESThe Family Support Counsellor supports and serves the families of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members through a wide range of preventative, supportive and proactive services and programs. Family support counselling programs are designed to enhance the CAF community’s social, mental and emotional well-being. The Family Support Counsellor is also responsible for short-term individual counseling and referral (1-3 sessions). The Family Support Counselling is responsible to assist in individual and community crisis situations, and also serve as a referral source for individuals and community.Knowledge Base:
  • Knowledge of military lifestyle and the unique stressors associated;
  • Knowledge of military resources and how they relate to the entire family;
  • Program design, development, implementation ,facilitation, coordination, and evaluation;
  • Civilian and CAF Mental Health Resources;
  • Crisis intervention;
  • Suicide Prevention;
  • Family Violence;
  • Attachment and separation dynamics and processes (deployment support); and
  • Familiarity with psychological trauma and recovery.
RESPONSIBILITIES - Programming: Design, implement, facilitate, or coordinate appropriate groups and/or workshops; Coordinate preventative/educational activities, seminars and workshops to the military community; Promote client empowerment by making available relevant resources, literature, and information on community supports (Family Counsellor Resource Library and Resource / Information Data Base ); Ensure that all goals, objectives and performance indicators identified in the annual program plan are achieved; and, Where appropriate, involve and work with volunteers in Mental Health programs.RESPONSIBILITIES - Intervention: Support, intervene, and ensure prompt intervention and assistance to individuals who are in a crisis situation; Maintain up to date listing/knowledge of community resources for information and referral; Assess, refer, advocate, support and assist the Military Family Members as appropriate; Respond to and participate as deemed appropriate in community crisis circumstances; and Participate in the Base Critical Incident Stress Response Team, Family Violence Team, Base Health & Wellness, and other relevant committees as required.Consultation: Provide short-term counseling to the Military Community at the MFRC (no more than three sessions); Refer long-term counseling to community, and base resources as deemed appropriate; and Provide ongoing appropriate in-service training to staff and volunteers.Professional: Demonstrate a high standard of professional conduct and behavior as reflected in the individual provincial regulatory body; Develop and maintain professional linkages with community organizations through relevant committee work and partnerships; and Create and maintain an official confidential record/file which contains intake assessments and ongoing contact information related to individual and community mental health activities and services.Please send us your resume with an accompanying cover letter describing how your experience meets the skills and requirements of our organization.
