About School District 69 (Qualicum)School District 69 (Qualicum) is centrally situated on east Vancouver Island and covers the area of Nanoose Bay to Bowser and spans from Errington across the Strait of Georgia to Lasqueti Island. We serve a student population of approximately 4700 students. School District 69 (Qualicum) consists of eight elementary schools (Grades K-7), two secondary schools (Grade 8-12), an alternate school (PASS/Woodwinds) and a Distributed Learning program to support home-learning families called the Collaborative Education Alternative Program (CEAP). False Bay School on Lasqueti Island is entirely off-grid with an immense solar project recently completed. School District 69 (Qualicum) also embraces many community organizations through various school programs. The area’s natural beauty, never-ending beaches, mild climate and small-town charm make it a popular tourist destination and a great opportunity to have a career in paradise.JOB FUNCTION:An employee in this classification works cooperatively with school/area counsellors, colleagues, Indigenous professional staff and with School Based professional staff in support of students with Indigenous ancestry.REPORTING TO:The appropriate School Based Administrator(s) through to the District Principal, Indigenous Education.ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:Provides basic individual and group counselling services to Indigenous students.Provides basic counselling and support services to the families of Indigenous students.Makes referrals to the school counsellor or District 69 Indigenous counsellor as the need arises.Assists in the establishment and maintenance of effective communications between the school and the Indigenous student’s home (and vice versa).Presents on the Indigenous history, language and culture in schools.Provides direct tutorial (academic) support for Indigenous students at school and facilitates these same services, where deemed appropriate, in the student’s home.Provides a direct link to government and other local helping agencies for Indigenous students and their families where deemed appropriate.Assists in the planning and implementation of Indigenous Cultural programs, including student cultural field trips.Assists in the planning and implementing of Indigenous in-service programs directed towards cultural awareness for all school district staff and community members.Facilitates, school/class visits from Indigenous resource educators (e.g. dances, mask making, traditional arts and storytelling, etc.).Attends Indigenous staff meetings, School Based Team Meetings and case studies as scheduled.Provides month-end reports to the District Principal of Indigenous Education and school principal(s).Completes and files individual record sheets for each student on their case load.Acts as liaison with for example secondary school recruiters.Performs other job-related duties as assigned.REQUIRED ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:A minimum of two (2) years College/University training.A minimum of two College/University level counselling courses.Ability to work with minimal supervision.Ability to work as a member of the education team.Ability to work effectively with students.Minimum one year similar or related experience.Valid Emergency First Aid Certificate.Ability to communicate effectively.Eligibility for this position is limited to applicants who are of Aboriginal decent.Please submit a complete application package clearly quoting job number to:Make a Future / School District 69 (Qualicum)Please note to submit your application to the actual job posting you must click onto the job posting, then click the “APPLY” button.School District 69 (Qualicum)Director of Human Resources - School District 69 (Qualicum)Email: jobpostings@sd69.bc.caFor further information please contact Denise Kinney, Human Resources Assistant at 250 954 3069 or dkinney@sd69.bc.ca.
