JOB TITLE: Program Coordinator – Literacy ServicesLOCATION: 60 James Street, Suite 303, Parry SoundDEPARTMENT: Employment & Literacy Services – Parry SoundPAY BAND: 4PLACEMENT: Full time 30 hours per weekABOUT THE YMCA OF SIMCOE/MUSKOKA:The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka currently serves over 125,000 people in Simcoe County and the Districts of Muskoka and Parry Sound in Central Ontario. The YMCA is one of the largest charities within our service area, providing over $1.1 million annually of support and access to our programs and services.With a staff complement of 1200+ full and part-time staff, combined with over 1,000 volunteers and donors, and an operating budget of $39 million, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka serves over 30,000 annual members and participants through its eight membership centres in Barrie, Collingwood, Gravenhurst, Innisfil, Midland, Orillia, Parry Sound, and Wasaga Beach; 3,000 Child Care families across a number of communities; registers 4,000 day campers in addition to 800 overnight campers at YMCA Camp Kitchikewana on Beausoleil Island; over 15,000 people through leadership development, outdoor education and family programs at YMCA Geneva Park; and counsels over 20,000 people in several community development programs.As our Mission Statement affirms, “My Y is dedicated to the growth of all persons in spirit, mind and body, and to their sense of belonging to each other and the global community.” Our Vision for the future is “My Y inspires people to reach their full potential.”GENERAL FUNCTION:The YMCA Literary Services provides Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) instruction to adults, 16 years of age and over. The Program Coordinator is responsible to direct and manage the daily operations of the program, including delivery of the LBS program, learner assessment, and small group facilitation. The program coordinator manages Literacy Services staff and reports to the Team Leader.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to the mission and core values of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka and the YMCA in Canada.
  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to serving the membership, facility users and all program participants of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka.
  • Following Ministry guidelines, conduct student assessments, develop training plans, and assist with the monitoring, follow up and support/guidance given to all clients throughout their learning cycle
  • Screen prospective tutors, ensure learners are appropriately matched with a tutor and that a relevant training plan is established
  • Be able to assess client’s commitment and dedication to desired program
  • Facilitate learning sessions, group and one-one-one as required, for reading, writing, mathematics and computer literacy
  • Ensure student files follow YMCA guidelines, achieving a file audit goal of 9.5
  • Assist individuals with complex issues using an in depth, participant-centered approach
  • Implement an Employment focus for the program and work with MTCU and other community partners.
  • Collect and report on defined learning benchmarks
  • Work closely with other YMCA programs and provide a wider service to learners including employment
  • Initiate, coordinate and conduct marketing and outreach activities to community agencies, organizations and employers
  • Promote volunteerism and train literacy volunteers and conduct activities to keep them engaged
  • Maintain a tidy, safe, centre with up-to-date resources and adequate supplies
  • Observe changing needs within the existing services and look for creative new opportunities to expand them.
  • Be able to work independently while maintaining team cohesion.
  • Represent the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka as per standards outlined in the YMCA personnel policy.
  • Complete, update and prioritize all required paperwork, case notes and documentation in a timely manner.
JOB KNOWLEDGE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • University degree in Adult Education or related field
  • Minimum three years’ experience teaching basic skills to adults in the literacy field
  • Experience and skill in facilitating small groups
  • Assessment skills according to MTCU criteria for LBS participation
  • Knowledge of the learning outcomes approach used in LBS programs funded by Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of LBS system in Ontario and IMS an asset
  • Experience developing training plans and curriculum frameworks
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated sensitivity to diversity and a demonstrated knowledge of best practices surrounding conflict resolution
  • Ability to work with learners learning at multi-levels
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting persons with literacy and learning challenges and with learning disabilities an asset
  • Creativity and innovation – develops new ways or adapts existing ideas to help achieve desired outcomes
  • Able to work with a team and independently
  • Flexibility regarding assigned work hours and location as some travel may be required
  • Clear Police Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Mandated training (including AODA, Workplace Violence & Harassment, Health & Safety Awareness, Child Protection, etc.) is required before or shortly after commencement of work
