What can I expect to do in this role
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs and priorities, and recommends projects that meet institutional needs;
  • Reviews submitted plans, blueprints, and drawings for compliance with building codes. Inspects and monitors ongoing work for completion on schedule and within budget to meet contracted safety and quality standards.
  • Coordinate and evaluate the daily work activities of external service providers, internal tradespeople, and facility maintenance workers;
  • Participate on a number of committees (e.g. Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee) as member or Chair.

  • You can coordinate, supervise, designate, schedule the daily operations and work of varied trades workers, contractors, and/or inmate workers and correctional staff assigned to maintenance projects
  • You have knowledge of human resource practices, policies and collective agreements to evaluate work performance, conduct recruitment, identify staff training needs and address employee relations matters.
  • You can communicate job expectations and values and support a values-based and inclusive team.
  • You can monitor and control the allocated operation budget for the unit and regularly provide assurance reports on financial activities.
Skills Trade and Operational Knowledge:
  • You have knowledge normally acquired through formal training and through several years of progressively responsible experience in a variety of trades some of which is in a supervisory capacity.
  • You can interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations and legislation (i.e. Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations, Fire Safety and Building Codes, municipal by-laws, various other regulations)
  • You demonstrate knowledge of trade practices, solid and hazardous waste management, WHMIS, and pest control to maintain safe facilities.
  • You understand security systems and practices to conduct preventative maintenance, upgrade and update systems.
  • You can provide support to senior management on strategic planning and program directions.
Project Management, Analytical and Prioritization Skills:
  • you have an understanding of project management principles and methodologies and can recommend projects and coordinate staff meet project goals and institutional needs.
  • You can evaluate work for completion on schedule and within budget to meet safety and quality standards required by applicable legislation and regulations.
  • You have the ability to prioritize work and issues as they arise, and respond to shifts in priorities and timelines.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  • You have oral and written communication skills to accurately advise and provide program updates to the business manager and to prepare a variety of written reports
  • You use your interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships with contractors, suppliers, and external consultants.
