Lift operates many resource centres in our community, including the local WorkBC Centre, the Community Resource Centre, the Family Place, and the Dr. Elsie Paul Literacy Centre and the Nook Social Enterprise Cafe both located at the Powell River Public Library.OpportunityWe are seeking a Temporary Education Coordinator to join our Immigrant Welcome Centre team.   • Hours: 30 hours per week
  • Shifts: Monday to Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm plus 2 flexible hours

SummaryUnder the direction of the Program Manager and in collaboration with the Immigrant Services Coordinator, the Education Coordinator is responsible for supporting the facilitation of the educational programs of The Welcome Centre including planning orientation sessions for individuals and groups and providing education materials for the ESL tutor/mentor program and conversation clubs. Orientations and materials help clients learn English and introduce them to useful information and relevant resources, services, programs, and opportunities. All Welcome Centre staff assist volunteers in offering tutoring/mentoring sessions that are relevant and useful for clients’ employment and other goals.ResponsibilitiesClient Services
  • Match clients to tutors and mentor for English studies, employment preparation, and exam preparation
  • Create learning plans and provide study materials based on assessments and consultation with clients and tutors
  • Facilitate connections between clients and tutor/mentors (tutoring space, Zoom tutorials, etc.)
  • Coordinate and organize conversation clubs (e.g. weekly Conversation Clubs; Parents’ Group & Book Club.) with volunteer tutors & Welcome Centre Support Staff including: programming; developing/providing accessible materials related to settlement, employment, parenting in Canada, and community resources; arranging orientation sessions, cultural events, guest speakers, and field trips
  • Coordinate client access and support for LINC Home Study & LINC Online, including arranging for remote assessments, start-up orientations, and volunteer tutor support.
  • Provide informal language assessments and reassessments as needed to monitor client progress and maintain records for informed support and tutor guidance purposes
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of The Welcome Centre for tutoring, classes, events, and independent study
  • Establish sites within the community for tutors and learners to meet and for program activities to be held (e.g., Zoom, Family Place, Vancouver Public Library, Vancouver Island University)
  • Procure, develop, and maintain resources and resource library including ESL and settlement materials, and software
  • Work with PRIS team to plan, organize, and facilitate events
  • Consult with Program Manager regarding issues arising
  • Maintain confidentiality
Records Management and Reporting
  • Maintain records and complete reports accurately and as required (tutor-student matches, student progress)
  • Enter monthly data into I-CARE (group orientations, etc.)
Orientations and Workshops
  • Schedule orientation sessions including: recruit eligible learners; recruit volunteer tutors to assist with one-to-one & group orientation sessions; prepare orientation materials; arrange guest speakers; organize field trips (with the assistance of the Program Manager, Immigrant Services Coordinator, and Welcome Centre Support Staff)
Staff and Volunteer Supervision
  • Assist in the recruitment of Volunteer ESL Tutors
  • Support & Supervision of volunteer ESL tutors/mentors regarding learning plans, appropriate study materials, resources, photocopies as needed, Zoom tutorials as required
  • Support & Supervision of Welcome Centre Support Staff – providing appropriate duties, ensuring appropriate workload
Departmental and Organizational Initiatives
  • Assist with the promotion of programs and services as well as the recruitment of volunteers at community events
  • Participate in bi-monthly whole org meetings
  • Participate in weekly Community Support Programs meetings
  • Participate in PRIS team meetings
  • Participate in professional development opportunities
Requirements
  • Post-secondary training in Education
  • Minimum 3-years experience working with ESL students or ESL immigrants
  • Experience teaching or tutoring Experience supervising volunteers
  • Experience developing learning plans and preparing ESL and orientation materials
  • Knowledge of English grammar and ESL resources
  • Familiarity with / knowledge of community services and resources for individuals and families
Skills and Abilities
  • Cultural sensitivity and non-judgmental attitude
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Organization, time, and general management skills
  • Written and verbal command of English
  • Ability to plan and organize activities for adults
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Word and spreadsheets

  • Satisfactory criminal record check
Working Conditions and Physical EnvironmentThe employee will be required to work a few weekend shifts per year. The employee may occasionally be exposed to moderately undesirable working conditions in the form of unpleasant dealings with clients who are uncooperative, upset, or through the sharing of difficult personal background experiences.Quick Apply
