For CUPE postings please refer to Article 9.01 (d) of the CUPE Collective Agreement to ensure you have met the eligibility requirements to apply to CUPE competitions.Employment Status Full Time Employment Type Regular Job SummaryReporting to the to the Manager of Student Success & Retention, this position receives supervision and mentorship in the day-to-day performance of work from the Academic Advising Team Lead (Student Success Advising Team Lead), and has a dual accountability to the Manager of Aboriginal Services. This role provides services to the Aboriginal students at the Prince George Campus for the purpose of supporting the College’s objective of attracting, retaining and enabling the success of Aboriginal students. As the Aboriginal Student Success Advisor, you will perform core Student Success Advisor duties with the special focus on Aboriginal Services.Specific DutiesStudent Success Advising

  • Assists students to set educational goals and make decisions that are personally meaningful.
  • Encourages students to develop self-planning and networking through the use of available College and community resources such as, but not limited to, cultural advisors, elder in residence, tutoring, counselling, financial aid, talking circles, student leadership opportunities, etc
  • Discusses students’ goals, career choices, alternative training, as well as general financial aid information.
  • Provides information on skills requirements and suggests appropriate counselling, testing, career exploration, and possible job visitations
  • Helps students to understand the complete requirements of a program, including admission requirements and prerequisites, and to develop an academic schedule directed at completion of that program
  • Provides guidance, advice and support to students through the registration process
  • Provides students with information related to College policies and procedures
  • Meets with students to deliver developmental advising that enables them to define and develop realistic educational and career goals, and plan an educational program consistent with their abilities, interests and resources; creating a learner-centered environment to inform students of the nature of the Advisor/Student/Faculty relationship, and the roles and responsibilities of each
  • Is sensitive to the appropriate time and need to refer to counsellors those students who are experiencing personal/social conflicts and educational/career indecision that cannot be resolved through advice giving
  • Coordinates and organizes workshops and/or student success events for the department
  • Coach students in developing educational plans that are consistent with their goals and exploring alternatives, factors, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of academic policies and procedures as it especially relates to admission, and academic standing
  • Investigate, assess and enable current CNC students wanting to gain admission to another program at CNC, guiding them to develop a strategy
  • Evaluates advance course credit and assesses certificate and diploma completion requirements; then forwards recommendations to the Registrar
  • Keeps apprised of relevant and important dates and deadlines as it relates to the student lifecycle
  • Proactively contacts students at critical points in the year (including the identification and requesting of relevant reports through the Manager of Student Success and Retention)
  • Develops presentations, handouts, and other resource materials to support students in their academic planning
  • Uses EVAL/Student Planner with a critical eye to ensure students’ course selections are optimized and accurately reflected in the system by performing periodic degree audits for individual students to assess and evaluate their progress
  • Coordinates communications to large, targeted groups of students (e.g. incoming students) to inform and provide timely and appropriate supports
  • Teaches students how to understand and use advising tools (Student Planner, program planning pages, CNC calendar, website) and helps students interpret and understand policy and program requirements as it relates to their individual situations
  • Assists students in identifying barriers to academic success and, if required, referring to appropriate CNC student services
  • Participate in college student success and retention programs, as well as departmental planning, implementation, and evaluation of the academic and success advising program goals and objectives
  • Consults with stakeholder groups on institutional advising policy and procedures
  • Works in collaboration with other advisors in the development of academic planning materials for program advising guides, workshop presentations and individual appointments
  • Participates in the creation and/or feedback process related to publications utilized in the department
  • Provides new and prospective students with test interpretations for programs that require placement assessments (CCP) and/or assessments of English and Math skills (EMAT)
  • Processes incoming/outgoing emails for the department
  • Plans, coordinates and delivers Timetabling Workshops
  • Participates in secondary school visits and/or career fairs as required. This could involve travel in the College region.
  • Facilitate and encourage a supportive and culturally-sensitive atmosphere at the College
  • Participate in institutional professional development, maintaining an awareness of College-wide initiatives (including new programs), and integrating new programming/pilots when possible
  • Serve on College committees when required
  • Adhere to stated professional standards (e.g. NACADA, CACUSS, C.H.E.R.D.)
  • Record keeping; using, testing and recommending changes to College systems (Colleague, EVAL/Student Planner); and other duties as required by the Manager, Student Services. Other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Be part of the Student Affairs team which includes Aboriginal Services Staff, International Education, Office of the Registrar, Campus Housing and the Library; and be actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners and communities
  • Promote a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues
  • Other related duties related to the area of focus (General, International, Nursing, Aboriginal, etc.) and as assigned by the Manager, Student Success and Retention.
Focus on Aboriginal Services
  • Provide academic success advising guided by holistic Aboriginal principles and values, including but not limited to:
  • supporting the whole person: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual being
  • acknowledging the student within a family, a community, and a culture
  • honouring the stewardship and connection to the land
  • connecting the lessons of the past with the hopes and dreams of the future
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with the local Aboriginal community which includes Aboriginal education workers and counsellors and other related agencies
  • Develop and maintain a system to measure and evaluate Aboriginal student success
  • Be able to collect and analyse student data, prepare reports and make recommendations that will address the academic, social, emotional and cultural needs of Aboriginal learners
  • Engages with co-advisors, student affairs partners and other CNC staff to foster ongoing learning, through and with day-to-day operations, of Aboriginal cultural values, principles and traditions
Skills & Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education in the field of education or social sciences or a related field
  • Experience in a related field with preference for three years’ experience in a post-secondary setting and working with Aboriginal adult learners required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal cultures, including the Métis and local First Nations
  • Experience in providing cultural educational work in day-to-day activities for the purpose of shared reciprocal learning
  • Knowledge of social issues in Aboriginal communities, especially those issues that directly impact Aboriginal students
  • Understanding of and commitment to the philosophy of adult education and customer service, especially in regard to culturally appropriate services
  • Understand of Aboriginal philosophy of education
  • Strong skills in working with routine and non-routine office procedures and systems
  • Demonstrated understanding of the BC post-secondary system and information specific to Aboriginal learners
  • Proven ability to maintain positive working relationships internally and externally
  • Proficient in appropriate technological resources including the following computer application areas: Word-processing, email, Internet and web-based research
  • Colleague experience preferred
  • Class 5 Drivers’ license required
