Job Description

Secondary YCW experience preferred. Strong logging and category work skills, excellent interpersonal abilities.DEPARTMENT: SCHOOLSREPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL OR DESIGNATESUMMARY:With direction from the teacher or administrator, the YCW assists in developing and implementing individual education plans for students with emotional, social, or behavioral difficulties.DUTIES:

  • Maintains liaison with teachers, counsellors, administrators, students and their families.
  • Conducts home and community visits.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of specific academic/social interventions with students who present unique and challenging behaviors
  • Provides guidance to students and their families.
  • Organizes and participates in field trips and other special events.
  • Provides transportation as needed.
  • Assists the teacher in evaluating and reporting on individual students.
  • Regularly participates in screening and review meetings as required.
  • Regularly communicates with parents and community agencies under the direction of the teacher/administrator.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities, which are site-specific.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, SKILLS (YOUTH CARE WORKER)
  • Grade 12 education.
  • Two year diploma/certificate (60 credits) from any accredited college or university in areas related to child or youth care and counselling.
  • Two years of experience (which includes one year experience in the public education system) with exceptional children or youth in the appropriate age range.
  • Valid British Columbia driver’s license.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform individually and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to follow directions with regard to individualized education plans and the dispensing of medication.
  • Ability to deal with very challenging behaviors on a daily basis within an emotionally and physically demanding environment.
  • Requires mature judgement in ensuring that the YCW provides services only in those areas in which he/she possesses the required skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate school equipment (e.g. recorders, computers, etc.)
  • Basic computer knowledge skills required.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USEDCommon classroom and playground materials/equipment (e.g. art supplies, audio-visual equipment, sports equipment, etc.)PHYSICAL ABILITIES
  • Sufficient vision and hearing to perform assigned duties independently.
  • Ability to lift, transfer and assist students as required.
  • Manual dexterity.
