Position: Environmental Educator (3 available)The North Coast Ecology Centre Society is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Priority will be given to those candidates who have the necessary qualifications and who self-identify as belonging to underrepresented groups. The North Coast Ecology Centre SocietyThe North Coast Ecology Centre Society (NCECS) is a non-profit organization working to create a permanent education centre in Prince Rupert, BC, that highlights the region’s ecological richness, both terrestrial and marine. Our mission is to inspire a sense of awe, respect and stewardship for this area, its wildlife, ecosystems, people and culture. The North Coast Ecology Centre Society operates in the traditional territory of the Coast Ts’msyen Nations and with their participation, guidance and approval, the NCECS’s goal is to incorporate and include local indigenous knowledge, stories, and language into our programming. The future centre will use a combination of engaging programs and exhibits, including live displays of fish and marine invertebrates (collected and released each season), and will offer a new tourist destination, activate and revitalize Prince Rupert’s waterfront, and become a community resource for locals to connect with and learn about the environment around them. While the Society plans, designs, and builds a new, permanent centre, it is simultaneously creating and executing exciting community events and programs that help us fulfill our mission. For example, the NCECS held the first and second annual North Coast Whale Festival in 2018 and 2019, organized an online lecture series in 2021 and 2022, piloted a live dive school program, and hosted a month-long “pop-up†ecology centre on the Prince Rupert waterfront in the summer of 2022.Role OverviewIn 2022, the NCECS will continue with a summer season of programming in and around Prince Rupert to engage the public and youth in learning about local ecology. The team of Educators are responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and conducting educational programs and displays that will highlight the region’s ecological richness and engage the community in environmental learning and stewardship. Throughout the summer of 2022, the team will plan and host a schedule of events that engage a variety of audiences, from children to adults, with Covid-19 safety protocols in place if required. These events will include interpretive trail walks with various themes, activities near the waterfront engaging tourists and locals when cruise ships are docked, low-tide beach explorations, drop-in family events, and stewardship activities. Please note the following important information:This position is partially funded by a grant from Canada Summer Jobs, which requires the successful candidate to:
