Job Description

IMPORTANT: Effective immediatelySalary scale: $66,616 - $88,819The Library at John Abbott College has moved its collection of 66,000 print volumes and its electronic and other resources into a space of 3700 square meters, following a 15-million-dollar renovation at the centre of a beautiful, century-old campus. The Library also includes a 40-seat computer lab in its central location and a separate Language Learning Centre.We are looking for a professionally trained librarian prepared to provide the leadership and vision to ensure the Library realizes its full potential at the heart of the Colleges educational life.JOB SUMMARY:Reporting to the Academic Dean, the Library Manager is responsible for managing the operations of the Library and its future development.RESPONSIBILITIES:Under the supervision of the Academic Dean, the Library Manager will have the following responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operations of the Library and plan its continued development in newly renovated facilities, supporting its role in the Colleges educational mission as a key resource for student research, exchange, access, discovery and study.
  • Ensure that relevant objectives, policies and procedures are developed and implemented, including the Librarys role in promoting information literacy, academic integrity and the respect of copyright, with the Library and its Manager acting as key information resources for the College.
  • Prepare an annual work plan, operating budget, capital budget and annual report, and monitor relevant statistics for the Library.
  • Work in a coordinating role with library staff, faculty, fellow administrators and others in ensuring that the collections, resources, systems and services meet the evolving needs of the Colleges students and employees, and in fostering communication with all stakeholders.
  • Act as the direct supervisor of a team of professional librarians and support staff, providing leadership in identifying staffing needs and in hiring, developing, leading, motivating and evaluating the members of the team.
  • Collaborate with other college departments in areas of common interest, in planning, promoting and providing appropriate educational services and event programming in the Library facilities.
  • Maintain mutually beneficial ties to the Colleges three-year Information and Library Technologies Program.
  • Lead the Library and Media Services Committee of Academic Council and participate in other college committees and venues for collective input.
  • Contribute to a team that includes two other professional librarians, with the Manager’s areas of focus being acquisitions (books, e-books and equipment) and systems, along with cataloguing work with two library technicians and other professional expertise when needed (reference, circulation, media, information sessions).
  • Ensure that changes and innovations related to the renovated spaces meet the needs of Library stakeholders, and support the Communications Department in completing fundraising for ongoing restoration work.
  • Liaise with other libraries and interact with various related organizations in the college network.
  • Assume other responsibilities as requested by the Academic Dean.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:Education:Master’s in Library Information Sciences from an accredited ALA program or a diploma which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.Specific Requirements:
  • Four or more years of relevant experience for managing a library, with experience in managing employees, budgets and/or collection development (experience in managing employees within a unionized environment would be an asset)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to demonstrate empathy and a flexible, team-oriented approach, while motivating staff with a vision that incorporates innovation and a clear focus on serving the college community
  • Experience with cataloguing and Integrated Library Systems, and ability to use Excel
  • Advanced English, oral and written
  • Intermediate French, oral and written
