Job Description

Subsidiary: Miller Paving LimitedLocation: Scarborough, ONWhat Does a DZ Labourer DoWith instructions from the General Foreperson, the DZ Labourers will perform repairs and maintain the highway infrastructure, so it meets the performance requirements of the Ministry Directed Contract. This could include physically demanding duties such as pothole repairs, installing small signs, end treatments to debris pickup while assisting the emergency response operators and patrollers on the highway. You may be required to operate a loader, crash truck, sign truck, and participate in winter operations as an equipment operator.As a DZ Labourer, You Will:

  • Promote, lead, and execute a Safety-First culture for all employees, sub-contractors, and consultants in compliance with Miller Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies and ensure contractual HSE obligations for the staff and public are met
  • Repairs to the highway, including but not limited to, pothole, installing small signs, end treatments, guiderails, washing bridges, sweeping, grass cutting, etc.
  • Become familiar with performance requirements of a Ministry Directed contract
  • Operate heavy equipment, including winter combination units, spreaders, crash trucks and loaders
  • Assist in providing traffic control at work zones and at incident scenes, including the setup and take down of traffic closures
  • Aid the Emergency Response team to implement an emergency plan in situations such as spills, accidents, inclement weather, etc.
  • Conduct daily circle checks of equipment before operating
  • Clean and maintain equipment and perform minor repairs.
  • Perform housekeeping duties to ensure the shop, common areas, and exterior of the yard are clean and safe
  • Respond to calls dispatched from MTO with urgency, complete collision incident reports, and liaise with the supervisor and MTO as needed
  • Provide traffic control at the accident scene
  • Respond to emergency situations such as spills, accidents, inclement eather and assist in implementing an emergency plan as needed
  • Communicate with authorities at emergency scenes
  • Conduct daily circle checks on vehicles
  • Maintain accurate documentation – hours of service, fuel records, incident reports, time sheets, logs etc.
What Youll Bring:
  • Knowledge of Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) Book 7 through prior positions, including landscaping, etc., an asset
  • Crash Truck experience, an asset
  • Highway maintenance experience, an asset
  • Class D commercial license with air brake endorsement (Z) and a clean driver’s abstract

  • Excellent team player to work productively in a highly functional team
  • Flexibility and organizational skills to multitask and manage time in a fast-paced environment with rapidly shifting priorities
  • Mechanical knowledge and experience with general equipment maintenance and operation of small tools and heavy equipment
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Effective communication (both written and verbal) to accurately document daily activities
  • Customer service oriented to effectively communicate with various stake holders (MTO, general public) and attend to their concerns with utmost sense of urgency
  • Problem solving skills and decision-making skills
