Job Description

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto-based multiservice organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices. Our mission is achieved through culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, childcare, educational, and employment services and youth development.ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER ROLE Committee Members who are non-applicants of the fund will adjudicate, review, and rank all eligible applications according to the given criteria and will submit their rankings to SBCCI-Tropicana Community Services.Responsibility for Committee Members:

  • Will review applications from the Atlantic, Central, and Western regions
  • Fully assess and provide preliminary scores for all applications assigned to them.
  • Score applications following the funding opportunity’s evaluation criteria with the scoring matrix provided.
  • Where grants are likely to be recommended, the committee members will review and recommend a funding amount for each application.
  • All work will be completed electronically, therefore Committee Members will be trained to use an online granting platform to submit their final scoring.
  • Committee members will also be provided with a matrix for noting the strengths and weaknesses of each of their assigned applications. ***Please note these notes will serve as the bases for discussing applications during the final adjudication meeting.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Have knowledge and experience reviewing grant applications.
  • Be a resident in Canada.
  • Familiar with Black communities/organizational issues in their residing region.
  • Equipped with knowledge and experience of community-based organizations, volunteerism, and community development.
  • Possess awareness and knowledge of local, regional or provincial opportunities and challenges.
  • Proficient with the use of online meeting platforms i.e. Zoom
  • Bilingual (French-speaking) would be an asset.
Meeting Frequency & Format:
  • Committee meetings will occur based on need basis and adequate notification will be given ahead of time.
  • Dedicated 2-3 hours within a 6-8-week turnaround time, up to 30 hours.
  • All meetings will be virtual via Zoom with your appointed committee chair.
Review Committee Member Expectations:
  • Review Committee members will be full and active participants in the review process, responding promptly to any communications and adhering to the timeline listed above.
  • Members will be fair and unbiased in judging the submissions according to the established criteria.
  • Current grantees cannot be members of the GRC.
  • Members will notify staff or the Chair if they encounter a conflict of interest, such as judging a submission from their own eye bank.
  • Members will maintain confidentiality regarding the review process and scoring.
  • We welcome volunteers with diverse perspectives and experiences including young leaders and elders and parents with lived experience with the black community.
  • A maximum of $400 honorarium will be provided to GRC members upon completion of the review process.
