LocationSelkirkAbout the jobJob summaryAbout the teamSouth Scotland Conservancy is the largest Conservancy team in terms of staff numbers. Uniquely, we work out of two Offices; Greystone Park in Dumfries is the Conservancy Office, but we also share a sub office in Selkirk, with FLS, where nearly half of the team is based. We are a wonderfully diverse team with regards to age and gender and this brings with it a great sense of curiosity, challenge, fresh thinking and mentorship. We meet together weekly in 3 area teams and monthly as a whole Conservancy team and bi-monthly of a face to face basis.We value team work and collaboration, working hard to maintain a one team culture. We have a number of team members who have embarked or are about to start distance learning courses in order to advance their personal and professional knowledge. This is welcomed and encouraged. We contribute both financially and in facility time towards this personal development. Youll enjoy a spirit of cooperation and support in this role.What you will doAs the Ops Manager for the East Area team, you will lead delivery of targets and standards for our grants and regulations work. Youll work with the Senior Ops Manager, National Office colleagues and the Tree Health Team to advance effective and successful delivery of challenging but attainable woodland creation targets, regulatory work including felling permissions, illegal felling investigations and Environmental Impact Assessment screening opinions and consent, and successful compliance with statutory plant health notices.At the same time youll work as part of the Conservancy leadership team to develop, support inspire, motivate and mentor both your own and the wider Conservancy team providing insight and knowledge around land use and management. Youll help the Senior Operations Manager and Office Manger to ensure that our team feels supported in times of challenge by others, creating an atmosphere where the team understand that there is a substantial support network to call on.Main DutiesManage, lead and develop the East Area Conservancy TeamLine manage , coach and mentor 4 Woodland Officers / Assistant Woodland Officer developing their expertise and competence including undertaking performance managementCollaborate with the National Office team , particularly in relation Grants and Regulations work in the East Area of the ConservancyLead and ensure good biosecurity measures in the Area team.Provide reassuring leadership to the East Area team, creating a supportive and collaborative culture towards ourselves and others. Be prepared to promote and defend the work of the team in front of the sector and stakeholders.Advocacy and RepresentationWork with the Conservator and Senior Ops Manage to advocate for Scottish Forestry OutcomesManage Health, Safety and WellbeingWork with the Conservancy leadership team to continue to drive forward effective health and safety management in the Conservancy.Ensure health and safety arrangements for the area team meets good practice, particularly in relation to lone working in the fieldReinforce a safety first culture within the team, leading by example on visits and monitoring compliance.Model and promote our well-being culture working with the team to discuss and agree effective work life balance and work patterns which support and engender work/life fulfilment.Person specificationSuccess ProfileThe Success Profile below set outs the essential and desirable elements that make up the vacant position - youll be expected to demonstrate these element in your application and/or during your interview and/or assessment.ExperienceEssential:
  • Experience of land management practice and complex case work
  • Experience of leadership at both operational and stakeholder level
Desirable:
  • Detailed knowledge of Scottish Forestry Grants and Regulations
TechnicalEssential:
  • Operational Forestry experience in relation to sustainable Forest Management, woodland creation and delivery/enforcement of Forestry regulations
Desirable:
  • Professional membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters or a commitment to work toward this.
  • Forestry HND / Degree or related land management / environmental / ecological qualification.
