The program offers free multi-level English classes, tutor matching, information and orientation, community connection services, employment services, cultural learning activities, and weekly drop-in practice groups. The service utilizes learner-centered approaches to teach and introduce newcomers to Canadian culture and resources, to connect them with the community and to strengthen English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. A welcoming and supportive community is built through shared multicultural experiences.POSITION SUMMARY:The Settlement Assistance & Community Outreach Worker within the English Language & Multicultural Services (ELMS) Program provides settlement services to immigrant clients and builds strong networks with community stakeholders. In this role, the successful candidate assists newcomers to Canada by providing Information, Orientation, and Referral services, facilitating Community Connection activities, and supporting clients in defining and reaching their settlement goals.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports To: ELMS Program Manager Direct Reports: NonePRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct Needs & Strengths Assessments and develop a Settlement Plan for every client by collaborating with the client and reaching agreements on the objectives, services, and activities.
  • Provide professional, accurate and timely information and orientation services for clients (one-on-one & group settings)
  • Assist clients to make informed decisions and provide necessary support and assistance working towards clients’ settlement goals.
  • Provide immigration application information services and assistance completing related forms for eligible clients.
  • Facilitate Cultural Learning & Community Connection activities.
  • Build and strengthen networks with community stakeholders to improve settlement experience for newcomers in our community.
  • Assist with other ELMS programming activities as needed (e.g. Hosting English Practice Group, Volunteer Management, etc.).
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • University Degree, or diploma and experience in immigration services, adult education or a related discipline and/or combination of equivalent relevant education and experience.
  • Must work well with people and demonstrate knowledge of the challenges that may be part of immigration settlement in Canada.
  • A demonstrated record of working with new immigrants, settlement service stakeholders, community resources and service providers.
  • Knowledge of immigration laws and pathways and related government programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as sound computer and technological skills.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to effectively coach clients within set parameters and time frames in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to provide services effectively to clients in a one on one and group format as well as by outreach and remote access methods
  • Strong critical thinking, people- and organizational-skills
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Be self-directed and able to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Basic Level 1 technical computer skills required

  • Represent the Association positively and professionally at all times.
  • Understand and be committed to terms of confidentiality, and sign a pledge of confidentiality.
  • Undergo a Criminal Record Search as and when required by the Association
  • Actively participate in regular performance evaluations.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
