Job Description

ERM Consultants Canada Ltd. (ERM) is seeking an Environmental Field Technician based in the Smithers, BC area to support biophysical field studies planned for 2022. This is a fixed-term position until October 28, 2022, with potential to extend.ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:The field technician will actively participate in field surveys under the supervision of an ERM field crew lead. This is a field study opportunity, and may include the following:

  • Vegetation Surveys – assist with botanical inventory with a focus on Species at Risk (SAR) and Ecological Land Classification mapping. The candidate will assist with the refining upland and wetland vegetation mapping and classification, identifying occurrences of rare plant species or ecological communities of management concern.
  • Wildlife Surveys - assist with identification of important wildlife and wildlife habitat.
  • Archaeological Surveys – assist with shovel-test excavation and pedestrian survey. Tasks may include hand excavation, soil screening, mapping, and artifact cleaning.
  • Groundwater and Surface Water Surveys – assist with the collection of groundwater and surface water samples for chemical analysis, measurements of groundwater levels and hydrometric surveys.
  • Fish Surveys – assist with the identification of fish species and important fish habitat.
  • Soils Surveys – assist with collection of soils samples for analysis to understand soil condition and asses for potential contamination.
  • Field trip mobilization and trip organization, light office administration (e.g., preparation of job hazard analyses and journey management plans, trip reports, shipping and receiving).
All field surveys will include walking long distances in variable terrain and in all types of weather, observing and identifying biophysical features, using a GPS, taking notes and photographs. Some programs will include, digging test pits, carrying equipment and processing field water or soil samples. Field days will be a maximum of 10 to 12 hours and certain surveys will require working irregular hours.The successful candidate will be required to complete desk-based health and safety orientation and training prior to the fieldwork and to follow all applicable ERM and client policies. Additional administrative tasks may be assigned as needed.QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Although not required, the preferred candidate will have a degree in biophysical sciences and previous experience undertaking or assisting in environmental field studies.
  • Valid First Aid or other training certificates are an asset.
  • CSA approved safety boots are required. Boots must be certified with a green triangle, at a minimum, and can be either steel or composite. Other personal protective equipment (PPE) can be provided.
  • Candidates must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 with current proof of vaccination available.
  • Ability to work within a team as well as independently.
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and on varied terrain.
  • Valid Driver’s License and a good driving record.
