Job Description

As a multiservice agency providing child welfare services, fostering and adoption, counselling, and childcare, the team at FACS Niagara works to keep children safe and families strong. POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Family Services Program Lead, the Life Skills Worker works with Adult Protective Services clients to enhance their ability to live successfully and independently in the community. KEY RESPONSIBILITIESAdult Protective Services Support

  • Provides support, mentoring and coaching to Adult Protective Services clients to enhance skills
  • Provides individual life skills coaching by use of appropriate professional skills and techniques, including, household management, cleaning, shopping, nutrition and food preparation, personal hygiene, budget management, socialization and recreational activities, banking, transit issues, community orientation, sexual issues, basic parenting skills, etc.
  • Acts as a bridge in introducing clients to developmental disabilities services providers and other community resources and support their involvement with these resources
  • Acts as an advocate on behalf of the client to negotiate the acquisition of needed services on their behalf
  • Advocates with other collaterals to ensure a community approach to assisting Adult Protective Services clients
  • Follows prescribed induvial or group activities and ensures the safety and well-being of clients in care according to centre and agency policies and procedures including outside supervision and vehicles in transporting clients
  • Completes required administrative and recording requirements within required timeframes
  • Ensures files are appropriately maintained throughout the life of the case including secure storage of files
Team Building
  • Actively participates and engages in supervision on a regular basis
  • Actively participates and engages in team and staff meetings, service training sessions and other meetings/sessions as required
  • Supports the team and works with team members to ensure department and agency caseload needs are met including coverage when required
Other Related Activities
  • Assumes primary responsibility for coordinating client special events
  • Demonstrates solid crisis intervention and de-escalation skills when required
  • Identifies, promotes and supports the use of community resources to assist clients
  • Knows and adheres to all applicable FCC and FACS policies, procedures and relevant administrative practices
  • Perform other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Developmental Services Worker Diploma or related degree/diploma preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years working with clients with developmental disabilities
  • Solid knowledge of developmentally disabled adults and their associated support community
  • Solid knowledge of legislation, regulations and standards governing adult protective services
  • Excellent crisis intervention skills
  • Valid G Driver’s License and access to a reliable motor vehicle with appropriate liability insurance is required
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Good ability to use MS Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, etc)
  • Good written, oral communicated and interpersonal skills providing constructive, meaningful and timely interaction with all levels of staff
  • Ability to think clearly with attention to detail
  • Excellent understanding and commitment to quality service and best practice
  • Solid ability to analyze information, problem solve, and make good decisions/recommendations
  • Self-directed with a sold ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Good written documentation skills that are clear, thorough, concise, accurate and timely
  • Flexible, adaptable and responsive to change
  • Ability to deal with sensitive and personal information in a confidential manner; acts with integrity and trustworthiness
  • Ability to work with and meet timelines
  • Ability to teach clients life skills
  • Ability to communicate in French or another language is an asset
  • May be exposed to potentially hazardous environments including household cleaning products, unhygienic environments, bodily wastes and fluids, verbal abuse and hostility from clients experience behavioural management difficulties, and occasional inclement weather during outdoor activitiesFrequent lifting up
EFFORTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is primarily performed at a desk in a normal office environment
  • Intermediate periods of sitting and computer/phone use
  • The incumbent has the freedom to move about or change position at will
  • Multi-tasks within a fast-paced, high-volume and demanding environment
  • Frequent periods of review and analysis and proofing of documentation required
  • Frequent interruptions
  • Occasional travel to FACS sites or within the region
  • Occasional requirement to work evening and/or weekend hours
  • Occasional lifting of boxes up to 10lbs
