  • Identify volunteer program needs in consultation with program heads as well as plan, develop and implement approved programs
  • Monitor and evaluate established programs in relation to institutional goals and inmates needs
  • Co-ordinate the recruitment, screening, orientation, training, placement and supervision of volunteers and monitor their performance
  • Ensure volunteers adhere to Ministry standards, policies and procedures as well as identify and resolve routine and complex problems
  • Orient new volunteers and promote programs through on-going communication
  • Work closely with volunteers and inmates in running the institutions programs as well as monitor their participation in activities
  • Deliver and facilitate core and non-ministry developed programming to inmates
  • Liaise with institutional staff in the administration of the programs
  • Other duties as assigned

  • You have demonstrated knowledge and experience with volunteer programming, recruitment and adult training techniques, and program management
  • You have knowledge of community agencies and resources to identify and arrange the appropriate volunteer resources
  • You have supervisory skills to recruit, train, motivate, and monitor the performance of volunteers as well as manage the administration of the program
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  • You can explain and promote the institutions programs to the public, inmates, and volunteers as well as prepare and deliver presentations
  • You are able to establish and maintain relationships with various stakeholders
  • You have writing skills to draft brochures, correspondence, and reports
  • You have demonstrated tact and diplomacy in order to appropriately handle requests and complaints
Evaluative, Analytical, Reasoning and Problem-Solving Skills
  • You are able to determine inmates program needs based on input from institutional staff and inmates
  • You can analyze gaps in services and recommend changes as well as resolve issues/concerns
  • You are able to assess suitability when screening applicants for the program
Other Skills
  • You are able to acquire knowledge of and comply with relevant legislation (i.e. Ministry of Correctional Services Act, Criminal Code of Canada, Child and Family Services Act) in order to train and supervise professional agencies and volunteers
  • You are able to understand corporate policies, directive and administrative procedures to ensure safety and security of the institution
  • You are proficient with various computer software applications and database systems to prepare reports, develop program proposals and correspondence, and maintain statistics
