Job Description

JOB SUMMARYThe purpose of the Instructor is to lead and contribute to the academic success of students andto the success of the College in achieving its statement of purpose. Under general direction, theInstructor is responsible for providing quality instruction and facilitating student learningaccording to the prescribed curriculum.JOB PROFILESpecifically, the Instructor will be responsible for:

  • Delivering instruction that meets module and program objectives as set out in the
curriculum
  • Evaluating student performance fairly and consistently
  • Contributing to the development of curriculum and instructional materials
  • Supporting the administrative functions of the campus to enhance the student
experience
  • Acting in a manner that upholds the College standards
  • Participating in College and Program Activities
  • Monitoring and reviewing students during practicum and/or clinical placements, as
program requiresSPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIESThe Instructor will at various times be responsible for the following as well as other relatedduties as assigned to support the business objectives and purpose of the College.1. Delivering instruction that meets module and program objectives as set out in the curriculumthrough:
  • Explaining the course outline, syllabus and expectations to students, and following
meaningful learning objectives.
  • Preparing lesson plans and teaching aids that utilize a variety of teaching methods which
will promote the attainment of desirable goals of students.
  • Encouraging participation and the development of critical thinking and communication
skills through appropriate assignments and in-class exercises.Position Description: InstructorLast Updated May 2015 Page 2 of 4
  • Arranging make-up sessions for teaching hours lost through student illness and other
unavoidable student absences.
  • Informing the Campus Director of any significant changes or problems that arise during a
module.
  • Observing scheduled class times, and maintaining an appropriate learning and
classroom environment.2. Evaluating student performance fairly and consistently, through activities such as:
  • Developing and explaining methods that accurately measure student progress toward
course objectives.
  • Discussing students’ progress individually or in a group as appropriate.
  • Creating and administering assignments and examinations to assess and evaluate
student learning.
  • Marking and providing meaningful and timely feedback on assignments and
examinations.
  • Maintaining accurate and current records of student progress and submitting final grades
according to established guidelines.
  • Demonstrating sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
3. Contributing to the development of curriculum and instructional materials by:
  • Updating online course materials and preserving for the College’s use, any additional,
updated or modified material used within the class. Material must be kept consistent withthe latest edition of the textbook.
  • Participating in the development and evaluation of curriculum and instructional materials,
as required.
  • Seeking approval for major curriculum revisions from the Campus Director or Education
Manager.4. Supporting the administrative functions of the campus to enhance the student experienceby:
  • Carrying out administrative tasks such as photocopying and preparing handouts for
students.
  • Cooperating with the administration staff and other instructors in the performance of their
duties.
  • Completing required forms and records and submitting them to administration staff in a
timely manner.
  • Taking and submitting attendance records for each student in the Course throughout the
terms.
  • Participating in teaching evaluations and performance reviews.
5. Acting in a manner that upholds the College standards through actions such as:
  • Conducting themselves at all times with the utmost attention to professionalism, integrity
and respect for students, the program, colleagues, curriculum and the College as isfitting of a person in a position of trust with respect to the students.Position Description: InstructorLast Updated May 2015 Page 3 of 4
  • Possessing a clear understanding of, and upholding, all of the policies and procedures,
as reasonably adopted and amended from time to time by the College.
  • Reporting scholastic dishonesty to the Campus Director and helping to determine the
appropriate course of action to be taken.
  • Demonstrating strong interpersonal skills in interactions with all college staff and
students.6. Participating in College and Program Activities
  • Attending campus functions such as Orientation Day, Graduation and Instructors’
meetings.
  • Participating in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the
college.
  • Substituting for other instructors within the same program in case of absences.
7. Monitoring and reviewing students during practicum and/or clinical placements whennecessary through activities such as:
  • Delivering practical instruction and supervision that helps learners meets practicum
objectives as set out in the curriculum.
  • Monitoring learners’ progress and supporting their practical learning throughout
placement.
  • Communicating with host organization to ensure students are meeting expectations and
address any evolving issues.POSITION REQUIREMENTSTo be successful in the Instructor position, individuals must be committed to developing,maintaining and demonstrating the following:Education and Experience: Degree or diploma from a recognized University or College in a relevant discipline. Three or more years’ experience in a related field, or the equivalent combination ofeducation and teaching experience. A credential in adult education or in progress from an accredited postsecondary institution,and/or teaching experience is preferred. Current membership/licence with relevant regulatory body preferred. Satisfy specific position qualifications as prescribed in program design and programapproval for the instruction of the courses.Skills and Abilities:
  • Relevant industry skills and knowledge relating to the area of instruction, including ongoing
professional development and continuous improvement.
  • Interest in pedagogical and multi-modal education approaches an asset.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills, including presentation and group

  • Ability to motivate and inspire students.
  • High standards of behaviour, a professional attitude and commitment to quality service.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other instructors and staff.
