Job Description

Role:Engineering Co-opReporting to:Chris CaskeyDivision:MineralsBusiness Unit:Weir Minerals CanadaWork location:MississaugaCountry:CanadaManage Others:NoDepartment:EngineeringBusiness Need / Purpose of Role:This position is for a co-op or internship engineering student currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in mechanical engineering.The Engineering Co-op will be supporting the Weir Minerals Canada Hose and Pipe Engineering group with technical documentation, basic engineering design, calculations and project tasks, mainly related to custom engineered high pressure hoses and rubber lined pipe (up to 48” ID and 750 psi).The Weir Hose and Pipe group is a recognized industry leader in engineering for slurry pipelines and works on a variety of challenging, high value engineering projects. This position requires an ambitious, adaptable, self-motivated student, who is interested in challenging, high value work in a fast passed industry.The candidate will have the opportunity to learn “hands on” engineering from key engineering staff at Weir. Previous co-op students have been given tasks of increasing levels of difficulty, up to complex solid modelling and detailed FEA analysis of large complex weldments.Objectives & MeasurementKey Responsibilities and Specific Accountabilities:Including but not limited to:

  • Use Siemen’s NX to create solid models and drawings for spools, hoses and detailed retrofit assembly drawings. This would include updating of existing models and drawings.
  • Assist the engineering group with data management using Excel and Siemen’s Teamcenter (Weir’s engineering data management software).
  • Interpreting/reviewing customer piping Isometrics, spool drawings, and customer specifications to develop a detailed scope of work for the new engineering jobs.
  • Assist with lab testing and component sourcing.
  • Writing engineering reports.
  • Depending on the candidate’s ability and customer needs, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using ANSYS for large weldments.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Education/Experience: The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution, pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science or Engineering, ideally in their third or fourth year of mechanical, structural, or related specialization. Chemical, Process or Aerospace Engineering students may be considered, with relevant interest or experience.Prior exposure to 3D and 2D CAD packages (Siemens NX, Solid Works, AutoCAD) and basic knowledge of mechanical and structural design, piping, materials, welding, casting, machining and assembly would be considered an asset.The candidate should have a demonstrated interest in engineering design and analysis and a passion for engineering.Language: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, professional documents, business communications, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of colleagues, clients, customers, and suppliers.Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.Reasoning Ability : Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.Computer Skills : Proficient user of Microsoft Office, including Excel or Spreadsheet knowledge. Auto CAD or other 3D modeling software would be an asset.Certifications, Licenses, Registrations, Special Skills: None required. Desire to pursue P Eng.Physical Requirements: The employee must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.Work Environment: Primarily office environment.
