Job Description

Central City Brewers and Distillers is a craft brewery in the business of developing and selling international award-winning premium craft beer and high-quality distilled spirits brewed without compromise. Based in Surrey, British Columbia, CCBD was voted Canada Best Brewery of the Year in 2010 and 2012. Its Red Racer brand has become a cult icon among craft beer enthusiasts throughout North America. Founded in 2003 as a brewpub and liquor store in downtown Surrey, CCBD celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013 with the grand opening of a brand new, 68,000 sq. ft. brewery and distillery on Bridgeview Drive. In 2019 we opened a 40,000 sq. ft. storage facility with approximately 2000 barrels of whiskey ageing in this facility. We are proud of being a local-Canadian Brewery that is currently expanding. In 2021 the company completed installation of a new canning line designated for contract manufacturing.JOB SUMMARYThe QC Specialist will be responsible for performing regular QC tech duties, microbiology task, training, identifying product defects, testing and assessing products, and supporting the QC department with all CCBD quality procedures and processes. This position reports to the Quality Manager.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintaining inventory of materials and reporting to Quality manager for orders
  • Ability to perform all regular QC tech duties proficiently and able to fill in when needed to ensure coverage. Works with the Quality manager to plan for shift coverage around vacations as needed
  • Ability to perform microbiology tasks as needed and works with the microbiologist to ensure that micro program is being followed. Support Microbiologist in micro traces and investigations
  • Maintaining relationship of staff between production team and quality team
  • Leading product development projects when needed/requested by Marketing and sales
  • Understanding QC process and bringing forward improvements to manager
  • Ensuring the completion of all required checks and documentation
  • Executing the initiation of new checks/documentation that have evolved or were previously missing
  • Ensuring lab maintenance and cleanliness is being maintained
  • Upkeeping team training on SOPs/procedures
  • Troubleshooting of process or equipment in lab
  • Oversee/confirm CCP checks for HACCP as needed (regular daily verifications, and annual validations if required)
  • Monitoring production schedule and ensuring tanks/liquid are ready – assigning tasks accordingly
  • Review of daily shift handover/task lists
  • Lead on shipping of samples to co-packs as required from production runs
  • Lead on chemical waste disposal of the lab
  • Liaising with production and rework teams to ensure swift and proper execution of holds and associated paperwork
  • Creation of batching recipe programs for BeraBrew system as needed
  • Maintaining/creating recipes and formulas for batching and brewing as needed
QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
  • Bachelor’s degree (science, food science, fermentation science, or brewing preferred)
  • Experience in a QC/QA role in a production food laboratory, experience in QC/QA in the beverage industry preferred
  • Comfortable with calibrating and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation. Able to commission and create SOPs for new equipment with support as needed
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Good attention to detail and record keeping
  • Understanding the brewing industry and fermentation. Interest in increasing this knowledge and understanding
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable communicating and collaborating with a variety of team members across production, brewing, supply chain and quality control departments
  • Possess the stamina for continuous standing and walking
  • Flexible availability (ie day/night shifts weekdays/weekends etc)
  • Excellent time management, and ability to multi-task
