Adult Learner Outreach WorkerAdult Learning Association of Cape Breton CountyThe Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton County is a community-based charitable organization that provides GED and literacy programs in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. We strengthen individuals, families and communities by meeting the needs of adult learners. We build hope and second chances.We are seeking a motivated and highly organized individual to support our adult learners in achieving success in our programs and in the community.Position SummaryThe Adult Learner Outreach Worker will:· Support Adult Learning Association participants to bridge the gap between their current educational programs and success and self-sufficiency in the community· Provide Adult Learning Association participants with information, contacts, referral services and supports as needed to facilitate access to community programs, services and opportunities· Provide Adult Learning Association participants with assistance to address basic needs such as shelter and food services· Support Adult Learning Association participants as they face barriers to their continuation in their educational programming. This could include assistance in dealing with issues related to housing, mental health and addictions, connecting to employment and dealing with their children’s school. Self advocacy and coping skills will be emphasized. The nature of support provided will vary with the participants’ needs.Required skills: · Understanding of the challenges experienced by hard-to-serve participants in obtaining employment, housing, educational and community opportunities· Strong working knowledge of community resources· Multicultural sensitivity and commitment to work with the socially and economically disadvantaged· Ability to work collaboratively, problem-solve and to motivate people· Communicate effectively with participants and staff· Strong interpersonal communication, advocacy, and problem solving skills· Proven ability to work independently and with minimal supervision· Strong organizational, time management and planning skills· Excellent oral and written communication skills· Adaptable, flexible and resourcefulQualifications: · Diploma/Degree in Human Services /Social Services or equivalent· Proficiency with computers, MS Office products· Valid Nova Scotia driver’s licence, access to a vehicle· Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings· Experience an assetTerms of Employment: $24/hour + 4% vacation pay; 24 hours per week; occasional evening hours; 21 weeks; Christmas and March break layoffsLocation: Sydney base, with travel to programs in Glace Bay, New Waterford and Sydney Mines programs as needed.
