The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development issues special certificates to:Social WorkersSchool PsychologistsSpeech-Language PathologistsThe Attendance Support Worker must have experience in social work, counselling or outreach with families and commuity partners related to Student Services.The Attendance Support Worker must also have a valid driver's license, a working vehicle, and a current Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry check. The successful applicant will need to provide a copy of their driver abstract and maintain a clean driving record while working in this position.Knowledge of the province's education system is an asset, as well as direct knowledge and experience of the communities served and the services existing in those communities.Attendance Support Worker Job DescriptionOverall ScopeThe attendance support worker is responsible for leading efforts within schools and regional centres, and in partnership with outside agencies (through SchoolsPlus where it exists) to improve student attendance. The primary responsibility of the attendance support worker is to work with students who are chronically absent, and their families, to identify reasons for those absences and connect students and families with the supports they need to improve their attendance. The attendance support worker will also lead and co-ordinate universal prevention strategies aimed at promoting regular, punctual attendance for all students, and may be asked to support early interventions with students and families, when an attendance issue has been identified.The attendance support worker is generally a circuit position, working throughout our regional centre in each of the families of schools: Northside FOS, Glace Bay and New Waterford FOS, Sydney FOS and Riverview FOS.ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the Student Services Coordinator, the attendance support worker will:Accept and maintain approved referrals on TieNet by Student Service Coordinator.Data must be tracked on interventions and the outcome for the student through the completion of the Attendance Support Intervention Plan.Assisting with reducing barriers to attendance and increasing monitoring of attendance to work with parents/guardians when students begin to show absenteeism patterns.communicate and meet with students, and families of those students, who are frequently absent, including home visitsidentify the reason or reasons for the absences through conversations with students, families, teachers, school program planning teams, and other school staffidentify and connect the student and family with targeted supports or interventions through the school, the region, or community agencies, directly or through SchoolsPlus, where SchoolsPlus is availableallocate the program/project funds dedicated to improving attendance within the school.support and participate in school meetings involving interventions for students who frequently miss schoolsupport families and other school staff in developing and monitoring attendance plans, including attendance contractssupport early interventions when an attendance issue has been identifiedlead or support school-based prevention strategies that focus on promoting regular attendance of all studentssupport or advise other school staff on school-based incentives related to attendancework with Regional Attendance Committees, established to analyze region-wide student attendance rates and take steps to reduce student absenteeism and promote regular attendancecomply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulationsperform other duties, as assigned by the Student Services CoordinatorRequired CompetenciesExcellent problem-solving, communications and interpersonal skillsAbility to establish and foster caring, supportive and trusting relationships, particularly with children, youth, and families, and to facilitate a transfer of trust to other service providersAbility to navigate and build bridges between students, families, schools and outside agencies providing supports and interventions using a strengths-based and culturally-responsive approachAbility to work well within teams, including school-based, board-based and SchoolsPlus or other community-based teamsAbility to apply effective mediation and conflict resolution strategiesKnowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of race relations, cross-cultural understanding, human rights, diversity, and culturally-responsive practiceBelieves in the intrinsic worth of each individual and familyAbility to work effectively in flexible work situations and settingsSelf-motivation and ability to work independently with limited supervisionAbility to maintain and promote confidentiality as the normCase management skills, including records management and ability to utilize current technologyKnowledge of policies, reports and guidelines that identify reasons and solutions for addressing non-attendance and disengagementThe attendance support worker reports to the Student Service Coordinator, and is expected to work closely with regional social workers and regional staff (e.g., teachers, guidance counsellors, school psychologists, school planning teams, coordinators), regional attendance committees, Schools Plus teams, and community partners (e.g., outside agencies associated with departments of Community Services, Health and Wellness and Justice).Salary is as per NSTU Provincial Collective Agreement
