CBVRCE 2022 NSTU-022 English as an Additional Language Teacher, 1 Year Temp. Assign., St. Anne Elem.The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administation of the public school system within the boundaries of the Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.We foster a caring, dynamic and creative environment that provides educational opportunities, promotes a love of learning, respect for others and challenges all persons to develop their full potential to become confident, versatile, lifelong learners and thinkers. Qualifications
  • Minimum five (5) years successful teaching experience.
  • Experience in a variety of grade levels.
  • Degree second language acquisition including a methodology course.
  • T.E.S.O.L. - Certification
  • Experience teaching in a different culture.
English as an Additional LanguageCandidates will be responsible to ensure that the program at all levels is anti-discriminatory and reflect the learners first language. Candidates must be able to support students in acquiring the curriculum while at the same time acquiring English Language skills.Assist students who have little or no knowledge of the English language with equitable opportunities to achieve learning outcomes across the curriculum.Duties:
  • Assess students to determine the level of English and determine the support needed for that student to meet the curriculum outcomes. Ensure that the content area teacher is aware of the level of proficiency of their student.
  • Assist students with English language proficiency through the context areas.
  • Assist students with test/assignments.
  • Collaborate with teachers to determine support needed in their discipline and discuss the specific linguistic demands of each subject area.
  • Have discussions with teachers regarding adaptations that may have to be put in place for the EAL learner.
