Find out about our purpose, values and principles here.Anesthesia Assistants (AAs) are integral members of the OR and Peri-Operative/Post-Operative teams. The Anesthesia Assistant (AA) is a part of the Anesthesia Care Team and participates in the care of surgical patients during general, regional or local anesthesia. In addition to providing technical support to the Anesthesiologist for complex anesthesia equipment, they administer anesthetic gases and medications, perform activities such as the provision of conscious sedation, and are responsible for insertion and management of intravenous and arterial lines. The AA provides constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anesthesia, all under the supervision of the Anesthesiologist, and with the use of medical directives or orders, as applicable. An AAs skills are required in the operative, pre-operative and post-operative care areas. As well, UHN AAs provide services to the Kensington Eye Institute and Womens College Hospital, and Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). The AA is also an integral member of the Collaborative Academic Practice (CAP) team, to which there are accountabilities for professional practice, education, and research.QUALIFICATIONS
