Job DescriptionReporting to the Manager, Major Projects in the Transportation Services Division, the Assistant Planner will provide planning, analysis, research, graphical, and technical support to support the unit in its efforts to advance Environmental Assessments and complex transportation studies for major, multi-modal and transformative transportation infrastructure that supports a wide range of city building initiatives, such as waterfront revitalization and major redevelopments across the city.Major Responsibilities:
  • Participating in conducting transportation studies and the development, implementation and evaluation of initiatives affecting the Divisions transportation infrastructure and programs
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of computerized information systems and planning and transportation models.
  • Collecting, compiling, and analyzing data and information on demographic, economic, legal, social, cultural and physical information relating to the Divisions transportation infrastructure and programs.
  • Organizing and participating in meetings to exchange information on proposed transportation infrastructure, development proposals, policies under review, and other planning issues
  • Liaising with agencies and community groups on the development, implementation and evaluation of transportation initiatives
  • Coordinating a range of activities related to transportation infrastructure projects and assists in the preparation of communications and consultation materials for these programs
  • Conducting research to identify trends and new developments in the field of transportation planning
  • Responding to requests for information from staff from other Divisions, developers, consultants, outside agencies and governments, elected officials, and the public
  • Preparing maps, diagrams, charts, tables, photo imagery, and other presentation materials using office productivity software and geospatial, statistical, design, and other computer applications
Key Qualifications:Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
  • Post-Secondary degree or diploma in Planning, Transportation Planning, Urban Studies or a related field, or in a professional discipline pertinent to the job function, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in coordinating and assisting with transportation projects or other similar planning projects while balancing technical, political, community and other stakeholder interests through public consultation and engagement activities.
  • Experience in preparing technical letters, reports, graphics, presentations and communications materials for management, internal staff, elected officials, other agencies, and the public.
  • Experience with undertaking studies in an urban environment and in the planning, design, programming and coordination of multi-modal transportation capital infrastructure projects using traffic analysis, spatial analysis, and computer aided design software packages, including Adobe Creative Suite and ArcGIS.
You must also have:
  • Knowledge of current issues in transportation policy and planning, with an emphasis on multi-modal transportation.
  • Proficient in using a variety of computer software (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, Illustrator, e-mail, etc)
  • Ability to effectively respond to public inquiries and concerns related to transportation infrastructure and programs.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete project assignments working both independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to use good judgment; excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and to prepare presentations and comprehensive reports.
  • Awareness of transportation equity and willingness to advance it through project work would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of transportation analysis and design software such as micro-simulation modelling, Synchro and Microstation
