A Better World.Don’t miss out on the opportunity to work alongside the world’s best in paediatric healthcare.Position DescriptionThe Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto is looking for a talented and motivated Bioinformatics Analyst to work in the field of clinical molecular diagnostics. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team employing modern sequence-based techniques, including genome wide sequencing to better diagnose and treat genetic disease, or to identify and treat infectious diseases. The group is situated in the Division of Genome Diagnostics and works closely and collaboratively with the Division of Microbiology to provide clinical care.This is a unique opportunity to use your informatics skills to impact patient care. The Division of Microbiology at SickKids has been engaged in clinical SARS-CoV-2 viral sequencing and expanding to the development of new sequencing technologies and methods into routine clinical practice within the field of infectious diseases.Genome Diagnostics is the largest CLIA certified laboratory in Canada and is working on a number of clinical initiatives, whose aims include translation of new sequencing technologies into diagnostic testing for human disease and building databases and data sharing capacity to better interpret genomic variation for clinical use.Heres What Youll Get To Do

  • Develop and maintain custom software as well as utilize commercial and open source software to help understand clinical genomic data and to support ongoing translational research activities.
  • Keep abreast of new and emerging technologies, and suggest new ways of analyzing and integrating very large data sets to better understand the causes of rare disease.
  • Work with genome scientists and genetic counsellors to ensure bioinformatic tools are incorporated into the clinical workflow to meet the need for efficient and correct interpretation of genomic data in the diagnostic process.
  • Build, test, and maintain analysis pipelines and manage instances using both onsite computing clusters and cloud based solutions
  • Develop standard operating procedures, documentation, and validation documents that conform to CAP/CLIA requirements
Heres What Youll Need
  • Minimum of a Masters degree, or equivalent experience, in a relevant field such as bioinformatics, mathematics or computer science.
  • Advanced understanding of computer science and bioinformatics including a basic understanding of genetics. An understanding of microbial genetics preferred.
  • Experience analyzing next-generation sequencing technologies (ONT Nanopore, Illumina etc)
  • Demonstrated programming abilities (Python, CWL, Nextflow, Perl etc.)
  • Experience with Unix operating systems and high-performance computing (Torque/Moab, Slurm)
  • Familiarity with statistical genomics and/or experience with developing, testing and maintenance of databases (MySQL/MongoDB) is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment
