Job Description

Clinical Nurse Educator - Cardiac Catheterization LabThe Clinical Nurse Educator serves as a professional role model, leader, teacher, mentor, and expert clinician in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab to support nursing and allied health care that optimizes patient outcomes and experiences while enhancing the safety, efficiency, effectiveness, and accessibility of patient care. The primary role of the Clinical Nurse Educator is to facilitate a learning environment where evidence-based knowledge is translated via education to optimize the patient’s outcomes and experiences. The Clinical Nurse Educator is a dynamic, innovative, and energetic member of the interdisciplinary team who conceptualizes and facilitates process improvements in a leadership capacity and acts as a change agent with the ultimate goal of improved patient care.The Cardiac Catheterization Lab at St. Michael’s Hospital is recognized in Canada for excellence, procedural innovation, and research. The team provides state-of-the-art complex coronary intervention supported by advanced intra-procedural diagnostic technologies. St. Michael’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab is home to Canada’s largest hybrid program for chronically occluded coronary arteries. It has a long history of leadership in Canada in valvular repair, with a focus on minimally-invasive treatment of structural and valvular heart diseases.The clinical area of responsibility for the Cardiac Catheterization Lab Clinical Nurse Educator is the procedural and recovery rooms. This is an innovative Clinical Nurse Educator position, requiring advanced change management, inspirational leadership, process innovation, and education expertise. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience in policy development, quality improvement initiatives, adult education, as well as advanced leadership skills and clinical proficiency, with a strong preference for critical care background. The successful candidate must also be highly adaptable, innovative, and work well in a fast-paced and changing environment. Reporting to the Heart and Vascular Program Director, the Cardiac Catheterization Lab Clinical Nurse Educator will work in close partnership with the Clinical Leader/Manager to achieve outstanding results and optimize a unified inter-professional team in order to respond to the needs of patients and staff.The Clinical Nurse Educator in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab has three main areas of responsibility.Education:

  • Education and staff development, to enhance the practice environment for members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess learning needs and styles of nursing and allied health care staff
  • Design and deliver education that is tailored to specific needs of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of education, revises education and learning activities to support changes
  • Provides timely feedback to staff on their learning and application to their practice competence
Consultation/Collaboration:
  • Collaborates and participates with Professional Practice to identify and support Corporate nursing initiatives
  • Engages members of the intra and interdisciplinary team, management team, Professional Practice and across hospital departments in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating Corporate and other educational initiatives
  • Participates in the hospital’s network of Clinical Nurse Educators and works with other Clinical Nurse Educator colleagues
  • Collaborates with the hospital’s Student Centre and Clinical Leader/Manager to facilitate nursing student placements
  • Collaborates with Clinical Leader/Manager in interviewing, hiring, and contributing to the evaluation of staff
  • Organizes and directs new employee orientation in conjunction with Clinical Leader/Manager
  • Plays a role in performance improvement by assisting in formulation of policies related to care and promoting the integration of evidence based practice at the bedside
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends, issues, changes in practice or equipment which may impact positively or negatively on patient/family outcomes
Research:
  • Participates in research projects that contribute to nursing and/or interprofessional practice and education
  • Participates in the implementation of evidence based practice and quality improvement initiatives including corporate initiatives
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario, entitled to practice with no restrictions
  • An undergraduate degree in Nursing as well as a Masters degree in nursing or education required
  • Minimum of 3 years nursing experience in Cardiovascular specialty required
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant clinical leadership/educator experience preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years nursing experience in Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Critical Care or Emergency Department strongly preferred
  • CNA certification in Cardiovascular specialty area preferred
  • Current BLS or ACLS (preferred) certification required
  • Proven program development abilities, presentation, coaching, and facilitation skills
  • Proven success in providing inspirational leadership in a team environment and in motivating and enhancing performance of team members
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational and communications skills
  • Excellent problem solving and management skills
