Job Posting – Unity Health TorontoEnhanced Extern Program - Clinical ExternUnity Health Toronto is seeking interested clinical learners to join their Enhanced Extern Program at all 3 sites of our integrated network comprised of Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital. This is an exciting employment opportunity for clinical learners in nursing, respiratory therapy, medicine, and paramedic programs, or recent Canadian medical graduates awaiting start of residency wanting to contribute their skills to the communities we serve. Successful candidates will gain valuable patient care experience and build connections with a team of passionate Interprofessional care providers in a hospital setting. As part of our ongoing commitment to professional growth and development, Clinical Externs may be considered for opportunities upon graduation and licensure.Job Summary:Reporting to the Patient Care/Clinical Leader Manager, the Clinical Extern is an unregulated health care provider working under the supervision of registered health care professionals and with the support of Extern Mentor Coordinators. They will work within a changing environment in interprofessional teams to advocate for and promote wellness while ensuring the delivery of safe, quality care. The Clinical Extern will develop their competencies through learning, education, experience and reflective practice. As part of our ongoing commitment to professional growth and development, Clinical Externs may be considered for future opportunities upon graduation and licensure.Duties include (but are not limited to):Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a registered health care professional to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties supporting direct patient care;Follows organizational policies and professional standards while taking into account their respective governing body‘s guidance for unregulated care providers;Participates in patient assessments and activities of daily living;Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever necessary;Contributes to care planning and evaluation;Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulatingProvides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries;Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards;Engages in additional skills as approved;Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever in need;Provides transfer of accountability (ToA) at shift report and when going on break;Contributes to and supports positive team functioning.Qualifications:One of the following:Nursing Externs - Nursing students between 2ndand 4th year of a CNO approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) Program, or in their final year of a CNO approved Practical Nursing (PN) program,Paramedic Externs – Paramedic students in the 2nd year of an approved Paramedic ProgramRespiratory Therapy Externs – Respiratory Therapy students in their 2nd and 3rd year of a training program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Respiratory Therapy EducationUndergraduate Medical Externs – Undergraduate medical students in their final year of a program of medical education leading to the MD degree at an accredited Canadian medical school.Recent Medical Graduates – Recent graduates from an accredited Canadian medical school who are awaiting the start of an accredited residency program.Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support requiredExcellent clinical skills and competencies.Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.Completion of mandatory/required certifications provided by corporate orientation/unit orientation, including extern orientation (e.g., Fit Test, WHIMS, AODA, IP&C).Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices.Demonstrated excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills.Demonstrated excellent organizational and time-management skills.Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute care area preferred.
