Job Description

The Respiratory Therapy Department is a key partner in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of care for critically ill patients across St. Michael’s Hospital and a leader in academic practice as demonstrated in collaborative education activities and research in respiratory health and disease. Integration of research, education and patient care, and leadership in innovation and technology adoption, are key facets of our interprofessional vision for the Centre of Excellence in Mechanical Ventilation (CoE MV).The primary role of the Clinical Specialist – Centre of Excellence in Mechanical Ventilation (CoEMV) is to support our tri-partite agenda of academic practice – clinical care, education and research, by demonstrating advanced knowledge, skill and judgement to collaboratively lead the CoEMV. The CoEMV at St. Michael Hospital leads in personalized and evidence-based mechanical ventilation through collaborative practice, education, research and innovation. The Clinical Specialist – CoEMV will function under strong relationships with the Respiratory Therapy Department, Physiology Lab, Critical Care Department, and the Canadian Critical Care Research Unit to contribute to the best care experiences for patients and their families requiring Critical Care.This role will lead the integration of innovations in mechanical ventilation into clinical practice. This role will support staff, physician, and learner education and knowledge translation of best practices in mechanical ventilation. This role supports the ongoing research in mechanical ventilation by contributing to manuscripts, assist with screening for recruitment into studies, collection of data on specific relatable mechanical ventilation studies, acting as the liaison between the Respiratory Therapists, the Critical Care Physicians, Registered Nursing staff, learners, Physiology lab members, and Industry partners.This role is 1 year contract position with opportunity to become permanent position within Unity Health Toronto.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build capacity amongst the RT and interprofessional team by supporting evidence based practice at the point of care
  • Remains informed of current research and studies in respiratory therapy and related critical studies as well as fields that are appropriate to clinical focus; coordinates meetings/in services for RT’s who are participating in research trials and appropriate product suppliers to facilitate exchange of information/ideas to assess the needs of study participants and arrange for product trials.
  • Participates in presentations/publications of research and quality improvement initiatives
  • Mentor RT students, colleagues, and interprofessional team members in research, evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Lead and collaborate in the development of education programs based on current evidence for respiratory therapists, interprofessional team members, and patients/families, and evaluates system interventions to decrease risks and complications
  • Mentor RTs and interprofessional team members in the development of abstracts, presentations and publications leads in the social media sharing of information for the CoEMV (twitter, blog)
  • Collaborate with industry partners to utilize new and beneficial techniques and equipment in clinical practice
  • Leverage partnerships with industry partners to establish an evaluation platform for new monitoring techniques and new equipment
  • Lead on translating learnings and findings into clinical practice
  • Leads the education and training in collaboration with CCD leadership to ensure safe practice for staff and patients
  • Lead knowledge translation for the initiation, maintained participation, and translation to practice for all mechanical ventilation studies
  • Collaborate with the Research Coordinators from the CCCRU to ensure adequate awareness and knowledge of ongoing studies
  • Establish and maintain relationships between the RTs, the Lab members and fellows and industry partners
  • Contribute to the development of manuscripts and submission of research papers
  • Supports Respiratory Therapy staff and Critical Care team members involved in research projects;
  • Appropriate training will be provided
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of a recognized Respiratory Therapy Degree program or recognized equivalent required;
  • Must be currently licensed by and in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO) for practice in all applicable clinical areas;
  • Current BCLS certification;
  • Two (2) years clinical research preferred;
  • Two (2) years clinical experience in a tertiary care hospital preferred;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required;
  • Excellent time management skills required;
  • Excellent computer skills required;
  • Effective decision making skills required;
  • Strong technical skills required;
  • Ability to maintain safe working practice and work in compliance of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations required;
  • Ability to take the initiative and work independently as required;
  • Ability to multi task and pay close attention to detail, organize and prioritize work activities required;
  • Membership with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) preferred.
