Purpose:The Communications Manager is responsible for the development of high-quality internal and external communications strategies that aligns with York University Libraries (YUL) strategic plan and the Universitys strategic priorities to raise the profile of YUL at York and for the implementation and execution of the YULs brand and visual identity. The Manager will play a key role in advancing the priorities of YUL by showcasing the strength and breadth of YULs archival and other intellectual assets, digital scholarship and engagement, teaching & learning, research and outreach activities as well as implementing communication initiatives that would target all aspects of the student life cycle, from student recruitment to alumni. The Manager represents YUL within the University with respect to communications/media standards, policy and planning issues and collaborative efforts both within the University and with external partners. The Manager is responsible for researching, developing and producing materials for a wide range of communications publications/media. The Manager acts as the primary contact with the Communications and Public Affairs Division (C&PA) and will champion the development and promotion of a strong and effective identity emphasizing the reputation of York University Libraries.Education:University degree or post-graduate diploma in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or relevant discipline is required.Experience:5 to 7 years recent experience in strategic communications or public relations with an emphasis on print, electronic and new media technologies and interactive communications channels. Experience writing promotional and informational copy for both print and e-media. experience in developing and executing communication strategy where several stakeholders are involved. demonstrated experience working in academic or not-for-profit environment. experience with research environment. Familiarity with university-level outreach activities.Skills:The Manager must have excellent oral skills and superior writing, grammar and editing skills. Critical attention to detail. must have the ability to understand complex material and write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences. Demonstrated expertise in developing and collecting ideas, excellent relationship-building abilities where several stakeholders are involved. Ability to prepare an objective-driven communication strategy, ability to manage and execute the strategy and undertake post strategy evaluation. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, analyze, develop, produce and coordinate communications materials. Expert knowledge of strategic, creative and tactical communications practices and procedures. highly developed research and analytical skills for evaluating the effectiveness and value of various communications initiatives. Knowledge of response-measurement methodology, technology and reporting. knowledge of print design and printing process and procedures. Superior knowledge of public relations and promotional materials. Excellent organizational, planning and project skills. Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and discretion. advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience with software including MS Office, various graphics, desktop and web publishing and web analytics. Knowledge of purchasing and budgeting and contract processes. The Manager must be committed to staying on top of emerging technologies and developing new strategies accordingly. Demonstrated ability to manage confidentiality at the highest level and ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative.Additional Notes:This position requires the candidate to produce a verification of degree(s), credentials(s), or equivalencies from accredited institutions and/or international equivalents at the time of interview.Normal office working environment. Long periods of time working at a computer. High volume workload at certain times of the year. Dealing with multiple priorities, demands and deadlines. Must be able to work flexible hours when required for special events and activities including some evenings and weekends.
