Job Vacancy: Communications OfficerLocation: Anywhere in Canada. If you are interested in this role, but feel you do not have all of the requirements listed for this position, we highly encourage you to still apply!About the role:Greenpeace Canada (GPC) is seeking an experienced Communications Officer to work on some of the worlds biggest environmental campaigns at a crucial time for the future of our planet.With climate change on the front pages, people taking to the streets, and growing public concern about the health of our oceans and forests, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to force governments and corporations to act and protect the living world for centuries to come.As a leading environmental organization, Greenpeace is at the forefront of the most urgent challenges facing our planet, from the climate emergency to plastic pollution, from deforestation to ocean protection.As a member of our communication team, you will sit at the very heart of our campaigning operation. You will focus on gaining influential coverage for our campaigns and identifying opportunities for strategic interventions that help us make things better. You will help shape our communications strategies and craft the compelling messages we need to win the public argument on behalf of our planet. We are also looking for someone who knows how to turn great stories and important information into compelling content that people respond to. Were open to experience in different formats, whether managing a channel, content marketing, video production, etc.This is a fast-paced and varied job that requires strong initiative, creative thinking, and great project management and organizational skills.We are looking for a savvy media operator who enjoys the cut and thrust of the daily news cycle, has a good grasp of Canadian media, and has some understanding of who holds the power and pulls the strings when it comes to Canada and global policy. We also need a proactive communication officer who doesn’t just wait to be fed a news story but goes out there looking for one.This would be a great opportunity for a former journalist to jump into a storytelling and media relations role, or for a digital or visual content creator practiced in outreaching and speaking to the media who wants to hit the ground running and gain experience in a fast-paced campaigning organization focused on environmental justice.Requirements

  • For this role we are looking for someone with solid experience of generating media across a wide range of media outlets, from local media to newspaper features, TV news, and consumer magazines.
  • Who would be great at spotting opportunities to intervene in current media debates, and be able to translate complex political, scientific and environmental information into succinct and clear messages that successfully reach our target audiences. As well as communication, interpersonal and diplomacy skills, this role will also test one’s ability to organize and improvise.
  • Who would be able to demonstrate substantial experience as a communications officer or investigative journalist. To ensure out-of-hours cover, we need someone available to take part in an on-call duty rotation on Fridays but were committed to making this position accessible and will work to accommodate the right candidates needs. We need someone who will contribute to our fast-moving strategic campaign planning and development.
  • Someone with solid storytelling skills and strong understanding of narratives, how they come to be and how they develop over time. Someone who knows how to mainstream narratives and take advantage of disruptive moments to shift them. Someone who knows how to build and pitch stories and edit them to a high standard.
  • This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills in either English OR French, with a minimum working knowledge of English as it is our primary operating language. Knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis languages are highly desirable. Knowledge of other languages that reflect the diversity of Canada’s many communities are also highly desirable.
  • You will work with colleagues across Canada and collaborate with other Greenpeace offices around the world.
  • Candidates should understand and support the Greenpeace campaign tactics, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience.
