Job Description

The Downtown East Toronto Ontario Health Team (DET OHT) is a collaboration of 35 organizations who provide services to clients living in the Downtown East Toronto area. The purpose of the OHT is to provide an integrated health system by coordinating the care and services for patients/clients and their families/caregivers across multiple settings. The vision of the DET OHT is to provide our community with seamless access to inclusive, inspired and responsive care through one connected system of diverse providers who enthusiastically embody holistic approaches to improving population and individual health and wellbeing.The Communications working group of the DET OHT is responsible for building trust and credibility with members and the community, providing communications advice amongst member organizations to support information sharing and engagement, and developing tools and processes that support effective and inclusive communication amongst DET OHT working groups, members and with the community.Position OverviewThis role supports the storytelling and strategic communications efforts of the Downtown East Toronto Ontario Health Team (DET OHT). The Communications Specialist will be a valued team member of the DET OHT.This position is hosted by Unity Health Toronto, but will be reporting to the DET OHT Director of Operations and works closely with the members of the DET OHT’s Communications Working Group. The successful candidate will communicate the strategic priorities of the OHT and develop compelling news content to build the profile of exciting partnerships, services, programs and human interest stories in Downtown East Toronto.The DET OHT is in the early stages of developing its brand voice and identity. In addition to storytelling, the successful candidate will support the DET Communications Working Group in its efforts to enhance the OHT’s reputation and profile through strategic communications and content strategies. This may include but is not limited to: supporting the development of a DET OHT visual brand identity, writing timely news content, making updates to the DET OHT public website and support with internal communications.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:Content Creation: Writing/Interviewing/Storytelling

  • Develop compelling content to increase awareness of DET OHT health care services, community programs, partnerships and people and that supports the DET OHT strategic plan
  • Research, write and interview subject matter experts for stories on the DET OHT website; manage the DET OHT monthly e-blast newsletter and community/trade publications
  • Use a variety of multimedia platforms to distribute, design and leverage content, including photography, infographics and new media platforms
Internal Communications
  • Support the communications working group and internal clients with communications advice, counsel and support
Public Relations, Social Media, Digital Communications
  • Assist team with media relations and coordinating interviews
  • Support the development of a visual brand identity
  • Support the design and development of a future social media strategy
  • Support with content updates to public website
Special projects
  • Support the implementation of special projects and other assignments as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in public relations, communications or journalism
  • Minimum 3 to 6 years of related experience required.
  • Excellent storytelling skills, with a nose for news; proactive about ‘finding the story’
  • Positive team player who works collaboratively with stakeholders across a complex health care system
  • Highly motivated and demonstrated success in taking initiative and problem solving
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment and effectively manage multiple competing requests with great attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure; mature judgment for assessing difficult situations and identifying potential public relations issues.
  • Present ideas and communication plans clearly and articulately to key audiences
  • Basic knowledge of photography considered an asset
  • Basic knowledge of multimedia platforms to distribute, design and leverage content, including infographics and new media platforms
  • Basic knowledge of WordPress considered an asset
