Job Description

ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.The Ministry of the Attorney General, Legal Services Branch, Ministry of Transportation is seeking an experienced and team oriented, enthusiastic and dynamic lawyer who is well organized, a self-starter, and who can work in a fast-paced environment.What can I expect to do in this roleWhile reporting to the Director and/or Deputy Director, duties will include:

  • Handling a high volume of files involving: complex procurements, large complex commercial and inter-governmental agreements, transit and railway and construction related agreements and arrangements and contract negotiation, and interpreting legislation and regulations relating to the Highway Traffic Act, the Public Transportation and Highway Improvement Act, Metrolinx Act and other statutes and regulations administered by the Ministry of Transportation and City of Toronto Act
  • Reviewing and advising on Orders-in-Council and Letters of Direction
  • Reviewing legislation prepared by other ministries
  • Providing oral and written opinions in the areas of the Highway Traffic Act, the Public Transportation and Highway Improvement Act, Metrolinx Act and other statutes
  • Providing practical solutions and strategic and sound legal advice to the clients
How do I qualifyMandatory
  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
  • Proven experience in contract drafting and provision of contract advice
  • Proven experience with large complex commercial and inter-governmental agreements
  • Familiarity with the structure and substance of the Highway Traffic Act, the Public Transportation and Highway Improvement Act and related transportation legislation
  • Demonstrated computer skills
  • Proven judgement and ability to work under pressure to ensure advice fully considers clients policies, programs, objectives and interests
  • Proven ability to handle multiple tasks while working under tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated analytical and clear writing ability
  • Ability to contribute and work effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
