Job Description

Bring your environmental planning, technical and project management skills to the Ministry of Transportation as an Environmental Planner.The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) strives to be a world leader in moving people and goods safely, efficiently and sustainably, to support a globally competitive economy and a high quality of life.MTO focuses its efforts on five key strategies:1. Integrate the principle of sustainability into the Ministrys decision making, programs, policies and operations by implementing the Ministrys sustainability strategy and continuing to build awarenessThe DivisionThe Transportation Infrastructure Management Division is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance and operation of the provincial highway system. It also supports access to local communities through its remote airport and ferry programs. These responsibilities are carried out through the Contract Management and Operations Branch and the Investment Strategies Branch at head office and through five regions. These regional functions are described in separate entries.The OfficeThe Environmental Delivery Section carries out location/concept design studies, and all aspects of the environmental assessment process for new highways. The office provides environmental assessment, environmental protection, and specialty archaeological, acoustical fisheries and waste management services to engineering, construction and operations/maintenance projects. What can I expect to do in this roleIn this role, you will:
  • coordinate the overall environmental component of transportation planning, design, construction and maintenance projects and ensure conformance with and meet environmental legislation, policies and procedures
  • provide environmental technical and process expertise to project managers of transportation planning projects
  • provide input to, and environmental technical support for strategic highway planning and regional participation in municipal planning issues
  • provide advanced technical advice regarding the environmental assessment process
  • participate in public sessions/meetings, including those which deal with controversial issues
How do I qualifyMandatory
  • The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid Ontario class "G" license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid drivers license upon being hired
Environmental KnowledgeYou have:
  • Knowledge of current principles and practices for environmental assessment and protection
  • Experience in incorporating environmental avoidance, mitigation, compensation and enhancement into facility planning, design and construction
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal and provincial environmental legislation and policies
  • Experience in the application of environmental factors associated with transportation planning, design, construction and maintenance
  • Experience with consultation programs and methods, including with agencies, stakeholders and First Nations
Technical KnowledgeYou have:
  • Experience in obtaining the appropriate federal and provincial environmental approvals, permits and agreements that are necessary to proceed to facility construction
  • Experience in identifying impacts associated with facility type, location or design alternatives and its impacts on construction, operation and maintenance
Organizational and Analytical SkillsYou can:
  • Resolve complex problems
  • Plan, conduct and report on multifaceted, complex assignments with minimal supervision
  • Assess transportation projects, determine the scope and detailed requirements
  • Apply project management skills, coordinate work and meet tight schedules/deadlines
Communication, Consultation and Interpersonal SkillsYou can:
  • Prepare and make presentations
  • Provide advanced technical advice regarding environmental assessments
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships
  • Apply experience in public and agency consultation
