Job Description

Do you have sound knowledge and experience in highway engineering and construction, and a passion for civil construction materials, methods and schedules Do you desire a working environment that offers a positive work-life balance If so, then consider this opportunity with the Ministry of Transportation, Estimating Section.What can I expect to do in this roleIn this role, you will:

  • prepare cost estimates for construction and maintenance work by assessing appropriate construction methods, project timing, scheduling, staging, material sources, labour and equipment usage;
  • research actual historical and current industry prices;
  • analyze contract drawings and tenders;
  • review and analyze individual contract bids for an award/non-award recommendation;
  • create critical path construction schedules;
  • develop estimating algorithms;
  • provide technical expertise and advice on contract cost estimates.
Note: The successful candidate will be expected to travel to locations not accessible by public transit.Note: The headquarters for this position is 301 St. Paul St, St. Catharines; however, the successful candidate will also have the option of working from the following office locations: London, Toronto, Kingston, North Bay or Thunder Bay.How do I qualifyHighway Engineering and Construction Contract Knowledge
  • You have sound knowledge and experience in highway engineering and construction and its procedures, techniques, equipment, labour and productivity.
  • You have knowledge of heavy civil construction contract cost estimating theories and techniques, methods and procedures.
  • You know and can apply Ontario Provincial Standards and Specifications, and related legislation.
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
  • You can research, analyze and problem-solve to evaluate contract requirements and assess appropriate cost components.
  • You can make recommendations, assess the overall project and bid, gather information and evaluate alternatives.
  • You can plan and organize work to avoid delays and reduce the response time for enquiries and timeliness of contracts.
Communication Skills
  • You have written and oral communication skills to advise senior staff on recommendations, conduct training programs, offer guidance and advice, and exchange technical information.
  • You have computer skills such as spreadsheets, word processing, project management, and specialized construction systems.
