If you’re an experienced journalist and inclusive leader with strong news instincts and ideas about setting a news agenda aimed at delivering for existing CBC News audiences and drawing in new audiences, this is the opportunity for you.Responsibilities include overseeing the daily news agenda for CBC, determining breaking news response and deployments to stories of national interest, and assigning high-impact journalism projects in collaboration with investigative and current affairs leaders. A commitment to and deep understanding of equity and inclusion is a critical asset.You should have knowledge of the CBC mission and news programming across platforms, and demonstrate commitment to public service journalism in a digital age. You are interested in the development of new video and audio programming, and ideas about how news teams can integrate with those efforts.Reporting to the Managing Editor of Domestic Newsgathering and Content Units, the successful candidate will work in collaboration with other editorial leaders across Canada to help drive alignment and greater coordination across CBC News, Current Affairs and Local, and for the success of network news programs, including The National, World at Six, World Report, The World This Weekend, CBC News Specials, Front Burner, and Digital Publishing and Streaming.The physical and mental well-being of employees involved in daily journalism is also a key responsibility of this role. You’ll help coordinate supports for the mental health and well-being of staff on challenging assignments and work closely with CBC’s Crisis Management and security team and editorial leaders on high-risk deployments.What you do:

  • Oversee a team of more than 60 national assignment editors, reporters, producers and associate producers based across the country.
  • Work with editorial leaders to determine daily news priorities, develop innovative content strategies, and guide teams daily through breaking and ongoing news stories.
  • In conjunction with the Managing Editor, ensure journalistic goals and objectives are being met, in line with CBC journalistic standards.
  • Implement strategies to reach the widest possible Canadian audiences on all platforms.
  • Work in collaboration with the Managing Editor on hiring and staffing of newsgathering and content units to meet the editorial objectives of news programming on TV, radio and online.
  • Work collaboratively with other editorial leaders to align programming, assignment, story generation and production.
  • Collaborate with other network teams on special coverage and coordination for CBC News Specials.
  • In collaboration with the Managing Editor, support the ongoing development of new and existing talent, with a focus on diversity and new skill sets.
  • Guide teams through complex journalism and editorial standards, in association with senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Editor and Senior Director on individual and team training and career development, as well as performance management.
  • Ensure that budgets are properly prepared and adhered to, and costs are tracked and controlled.
What you bring:
  • Minimum of 8 years related editorial newsroom leadership experience.
  • Strong journalistic experience and knowledge of newsgathering, particularly in a breaking news environment.
  • A commitment to CBC News 5R’s content strategy, with creativity and vision.
  • Extensive experience with journalistic standards and practices.
  • Superior understanding of journalistic craft, storytelling and program generation.
  • A knowledge and understanding of audience measurement targets.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills and experience to inspire and direct staff during periods of significant change.
  • Experience guiding and developing on-air talent, craft and performance.
  • Proven ability to find solutions to a variety of technical, resource and operational issues, make decisions to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities while juggling tasks and/or projects.
  • Strong analytical skills to solve complex journalistic and operational issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to be clear, concise, and precise on journalistic and programming matters.
  • Knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting and journalism.
  • Cultural sensitivity, awareness and a demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity in the workplace.
