One of the most successful and best-known programs at CBC News, this multiple-award winning show has been driving investigative journalism in Canada for nearly 50 years.We are searching for a leader who is an experienced investigative journalist; is confident and innovative as a programmer and leader; and is comfortable with the high-pressure situations and high expectations that come with leading Canada’s top investigative documentary program.The Executive Producer is a strong motivational leader, with a proven track record managing a team of experienced journalists.You are comfortable navigating complex journalistic and legal questions, making decisions and backing them, and your team, up as needed.As the senior representative from the program, the Executive Producer must be comfortable cultivating and managing relationships with other leaders at the CBC.A visionary visual programmer, you are open to innovative storytelling techniques that can take this successful journalistic brand to the next level, ensuring our stories are relevant to and noticed by new audiences. You will work to amplify the Fifth’s journalism by coordinating audio, digital and television production to create widespread immersive audience experiences on existing and emerging platforms.You will be responsible for creating an inclusive team, production and program that reflect Canada’s diversity on-air and behind-the-scenes and deliver content and storytelling innovation that will expand relevance and audience reach, including in key demographic targets.Function: The Executive Producer leads staff in the planning, conception, development, gathering and production of The Fifth Estate.Reporting to the Managing Editor and Senior Director of Investigative there is a regular and ongoing requirement for the Executive Producer to plan, direct, and co-ordinate the work of others, effectively communicate the program or platform strategic objectives, and oversee the development of the team and its performance.The Executive Producer is expected to have strong and proven leadership abilities that can deliver on the CBC Investigates strategic priorities, as well as a high level of competence in long form visual storytelling and investigative journalism.The job requires the highest level of creative thinking and an ability to originate and develop innovative program or production concepts as well as techniques and procedures consistent with an integrated content company, and to work strategically with internal and external partners.The Executive Producer must also be able to make immediate decisions in complex and stressful environments, pivot teams to quicker turnaround projects as required and has ultimate accountability for programming and platform results.A demonstrated leadership ability to elicit, engage and integrate diverse perspectives, voices and ideas, and differing points of view in our programming is critical.Work must adhere to CBC Journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices, and the Executive Producer must lead their team to ensure that this occurs.Key Tasks:

  • The Executive Producer is responsible for resource allocation for the program and is accountable for budget and business outcomes.
  • Responsible for team development by providing mentorship and opportunities to personnel assigned to the production or unit, or as assigned by Management, including program and production personnel, and freelance contributors. This includes ongoing feedback and the utilization of the PMSD process.
  • Performs all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification as needed.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
  • A university degree or equivalent.
  • Seven (7) years’ experience of which five must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, which is directly related to investigative journalism and episodic television production.
  • A proven strong team leader with the ability to inspire others.
  • Highly fluent in journalism law, including defamation and responsible communication
  • Deep knowledge of best practices and CBC’s standards for investigative journalism
  • Experience leading large teams.
  • Flexibility to accommodate the work/schedule demands of the leadership role as necessary.
  • Demonstrated talent as a television and video programmer with fluency in pacing, tone, presentation and storytelling and an ability to vet and restructure longform visual narratives on tight deadlines.
  • Superior writing, editorial and production skills.
  • Experience in conceiving and managing multi-platform stories, network rollouts and building program audiences
  • Solid journalistic background.
  • An ability to program relevant, audience-focused stories, which reflect issues being discussed by the general public.
  • Quick to react and respond to breaking stories.
  • Demonstrated skills in the area of conflict resolution, mentoring, feedback, talent recognition and development.
  • Proven ability to oversee expenditures and deliver programs on budget.
  • An innovator and risk taker.
  • Proven ability to foster a safe and vibrant team creative culture
  • A commitment to reflecting community and diversity.
