Job Description

Overview:Our team currently has an opportunity for a technically proficient meteorology or climate science specialist with atmospheric science and/or research and open-source intelligence skills to join our specialists on our Climate Resilience Team. Dillon’s Climate Resilience Team includes professional engineers, climatologists and meteorologists, and environmental scientists. Along with your background in climate science and/or applied meteorology, your knowledge is reinforced by an ability to effectively communicate core concepts in climate science and their applications in our work developing climate resilience solutions for critical public infrastructure, corporate assets, critical public services and public health and safety.You will join a specialised climate resilience team with opportunities for career growth within the evolving and dynamic climate impacts and adaptations sector, while experiencing strong guidance and mentorship from recognised climate change experts and specialists on the Dillon Team.Your opportunityDillon’s Environmental Sciences technical group is looking for an experienced Intermediate Applied Meteorology or Climate Specialist for a full-time position joining our multidisciplinary team of climate change resilience professionals. You will have the opportunity to work on new and exciting projects in climate change impacts and weather and climate risk management, while providing clients with a fully integrated and superior customer experience.At Dillon, we operate as one team. This position is ideally situated at our Winnipeg or Toronto or Oakville/Hamilton offices; however, alternate geographies may be considered. We offer flexible work hours and remote working options to help balance the competing demands of work and personal life.Responsibilities:Technical Development (82%)

  • Assist project teams on technical projects related to; climate change vulnerability assessments and adaptation plans including climate data analysis, contributions to infrastructure condition assessment reporting, stakeholder engagement, technical report writing, and contributions to development of climate change capacity-building training content for client groups and related sectors.
  • Assist in identification and selection of relevant climate hazards associated with specific infrastructure systems, industrial processes, municipal essential services, and related supporting assets.
  • Review the latest literature and analyze and interpret data from meteorological stations, imagery, computer models, etc. to assess the intensity, frequency and impacts of weather and climate hazards
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members including other climatologists, meteorologists, engineers, planners, scientists, and technical and administrative support staff
Business Development (15% )
  • Contribute to business development activities including client needs research, preparation of project proposals and presentations
  • Comfort with virtual collaboration tools (Zoom, G-Meet, MURAL) in project delivery with project team members located across geographic regions in Canada. Occasional
  • Business travel to other Dillon offices and project sites as needed

Qualifications:
  • A bachelors or masters degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, climate science or in a related field.
  • Two to three years’ work experience applying climate datasets to evaluating impacts in engineering, planning or other disciplines. A Graduate degree and research in atmospheric science could be considered equivalent to experience.
  • Openness and willingness to learn new skills and a personal commitment to continuous development
  • Ability to view problems/projects from a systems-thinking perspective – from high level to a detailed approach
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Technical skills required (r) and optional assets (o) include:
  • Intermediate spreadsheet skills (r )
  • Fluency and awareness of meteorological and climatological datasets and atmospheric processes applicable to regions in Canada, USA. (r)
  • Scientific literature review experience and skills (r )
Experience:
  • Familiarity with principles of statistical analyses, basic risk and climate resilience assessment approaches (any of ISO 31000, PIEVC, Infrastructure Canada’s Climate Lens Resilience Assessment Guidance, etc.) will be considered an asset.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Statistical software packages
  • Knowledge of relevant provincial engineering standards (e.g. National Building Code) and regulatory requirements will be considered an asset.
  • Strong ability to identify, review and synthesize key findings in scientific and engineering literature, reports, other relevant publications to client audiences and project teams.
  • Previous experience in a consulting firm will be considered an asset, particularly environmental assessment, or impact assessment experience.
  • Strong verbal and written technical communication skills. Ability to write concise, clear and effective narratives in reporting, in presentations, and contributions to proposals.
