Shopify powers millions of businesses in more than 175 countries and is trusted by brands such as Allbirds, Gymshark, PepsiCo, Staples, and many more.Job DescriptionWithin the Shopify Legal Team, the Regulatory Affairs Team works closely with internal and external stakeholders to help ensure Shopify’s platform makes commerce better for everyone. The team is responsible for engaging with regulatory and law enforcement entities worldwide. Just as importantly, the team works internally to develop and deploy strategies and policies to help Shopify’s business achieve its ambitious goals within existing (and future) regulatory frameworks, and through developing and implementing Shopify’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).As Legal Counsel, Regulatory & Content Policy, you will provide legal counsel to Shopify on cutting-edge regulatory issues and related matters at the intersection of technology and regulation. You must be a team player with strong legal, analytical, and communication skills. Deep business acumen, creativity, and an ability to build high-trust relationships will be key as you translate legal risks to internal stakeholders, while providing strong, strategic counsel that drives towards consensus.In addition, you will advise on, and contribute to the development of Shopify’s AUP. You will research and analyze legal and platform policy issues in jurisdictions worldwide, collaborate with internal stakeholders on AUP matters, and anticipate new areas for policy development. You will also draft content policies, and handle escalated, sometimes high profile AUP issues.Success on the Shopify legal team requires intellect, humility and a sense of humour. You need to take the work seriously, but not take yourself too seriously. You also need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, able to work with many different types of personalities, and be ready to navigate uncharted waters and frequent change.Qualifications

  • J.D. or LL.B., with a license to practice in the United States and/or Canada
  • 3-5 years of experience in-house, in private practice, and/or in government with a focus on regulatory law or content policy
  • Experience counseling clients on legal risks, ideally regulatory risks
  • Top-notch oral and written communication skills, no legal jargon, storytelling is key
  • Exceptional business judgment, relationship-building skills, and experience thinking outside the box to identify creative solutions in sometimes ambiguous situations
  • A keen interest in creative legal problem solving, including researching novel and unsettled areas of law
  • Ability to manage competing priorities simultaneously
