Job DescriptionAre you someone passionate about working collaboratively to create exciting, inclusive community-led public and educational programming that connects Toronto History Museums to diverse audiences Reporting to the Curator/Museum Administrator and receiving direction from the Museum Coordinator, the Museum Program Officer develops and delivers a variety of museum programs, services and experiences for the public and provides excellent internal and external customer service.This pivotal role in developing and delivering exceptional programs for Torontonians is especially important as Toronto History Museums travel on an ambitious and intentional change journey to decolonize the Citys museums and create community spaces that are inclusive to all. This role is grounded in advancing a commitment to Indigenous Reconciliation, decolonisation, Anti-Oppression, Anti- Racism, Anti-Black Racism, Equity and Diversity. It will embrace and support the work of Awakenings, Toronto History Museums most recent program which uses storytelling to connect people through art, creativity, culture and innovation. As part of the sites full time team it will help to encourage and inspire the museums teams as we work to fulfill the goals of the Toronto History Museums Strategic Plan.Major Responsibilities:
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates museum educational, interpretive programs, exhibits and events to enhance the experience of residents and visitors at the Citys historic sites.
  • Participates in the design and delivery of educational programming that aligns with the Ontario Ministry of Educational elementary and secondary curriculum content and standards, changing demographics, multiple learning styles and special needs for school groups, teachers on professional development days, ESL, Youth at Risk etc.
  • Participates in the development of exhibit concepts, specific research, image selection, and text creation. Organizes layout of panel content and deals with vendors for production of exhibit panels.
  • Liaises with various client groups and stakeholders including; teachers, school boards, museum and heritage advocates and organizations, community groups and other aligned agencies and individuals to develop and maintain partnership/sponsorships.
  • Participates in the planning and coordination of hosting major exhibits and cultural events that enhance the Citys historic sites. Provides post-event report including recommendations for future programming.
  • Conducts demonstrations and leads hands-on programs using historic equipment and objects for education and community groups.
  • Creates content for and updates the Museums on line presence, including web site and social media sites, providing information on and promotion of programs, services and special events.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and content creation of promotional campaigns strategically targeted to engage non-traditional museum audiences, increasing participation and program registration.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of volunteers.
  • Provides direction and training to various unionized part-time staff, students, interns and special interest/event volunteers.
  • Conducts group and individual interpretive tours.
  • Leads seasonal workshops for children and adults.
  • Tracks and monitors program expenditures, ensures compliance within budget.
  • Participates in preparation of proposals for funding, sponsorships, grants and seeks opportunities for prize donations.
  • Provides administrative support to track grant applications including signature and submission of documentation.
  • Purchases and maintains supplies, utilizes P-card and monitors petty cash.
  • Attends and co-chairs meetings with stakeholders.
  • Provides interpretation of historical events and activities to client groups and the general public.
  • Conducts research projects for the development of educational and interpretive programming, and for the development of reference and training materials/manuals.
  • Participates in building/site opening, closing, security systems, inspects gallery and exhibit venues to maintain and monitor safety standards necessary for public use and program requirements.
  • Participates in the day to day operation of museum sites.
  • Develops outreach initiatives and community partnerships to support the vision of the institution.
  • Leads the development, presentation and evaluation of special events at the Museum and its galleries, and external activities.
  • Develops new interpreters skills and provides feedback.
  • Participates in the care, maintenance and security of the collection and historic environment.
  • Provides site security for program needs.
Key Qualifications:Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
  • Post-secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function combined with relevant training and experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable experience building relationships with stakeholders and partners including Black, Indigenous, and/or other racialized and marginalized groups (including vulnerable seniors and youth).
  • Considerable experience developing, delivering and coordinating diverse community-based programs and projects in cultural or related sectors for different audiences including Black, Indigenous, and/or other racialized and marginalized groups (including vulnerable seniors and youth).
  • Considerable experience in creating audience-driven programming, including program concept design, development, coordination, delivery and evaluation within the museum sector
You must also have:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and client management skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing at all organizational levels
  • Ability to engage the diverse community at a meaningful level, and accommodate varying languages and needs with a deep commitment to diversity and equity
  • Strong knowledge and demonstration of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and work under tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to speak at conferences and in the community.
  • Knowledge of Canadian social history and Toronto/Etobicoke history.
  • Understanding of the Economic Development & Culture Divisional Strategy objectives and Toronto History Museums Strategic Plan 2020-2022, through program development, delivery, outreach and other tasks.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks related to supply management, including moderate load carrying and exhibition preparation as required.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid standard first aid certification.
  • Experience with volunteer management software (e.g. Better Impact), facility management software (e.g. CLASS) and Social Media is considered an asset.
  • Lived experience as a member of Black, Indigenous, other communities of colour, and/or equity-deserving community is an asset.
