Job Description

Unity Health Toronto is dedicated to the recruitment and selection of qualified individuals who demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the unique mission and values of the Organization.The Laboratory Medicine/Pathology Department performs over six (6) million tests per year that are critical to all aspects of medical care throughout the Hospital. The laboratory is committed to the academic promotion of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology disciplines within the Hospital to the extent that the Hospital becomes a magnet site for world class Laboratory Medicine Physicians, Researchers, Students and revenue generating activity.The primary responsibilities of the Operations Leader, Laboratory include:

  • providing operational leadership, and technical expertise for the successful performance of laboratory operations (Pathology and Cytology, including Molecular Genetic Pathology/Cytogenetics assays);
  • Assisting and supporting Managers in the successful planning, development, administration and smooth execution of daily operations.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversees the day-to-day operation in the pathology/cytology labs
  • Schedules staff and related functions, ensuring staffing is maintained at efficient, safe and optimal levels, daily, vacation, during leave of absence and sick time coverage
  • Addresses operational issues as they arise; facilitates problem solving and/or dispute resolution
  • Monitors quality assurance and safety practice
  • Provides operational and technical guidance to staff
  • Assist with the purchase, implementation, validation and training of new equipment
  • Assist with the validation, verification, and implementation of new molecular/cytogenetics assays
  • Troubleshoots equipment/procedure problems
  • Participates in the development of and contributes to the implementation of the Laboratory Medicine Department vision and strategic direction
  • Participates in the development of and contributes to the planning and delivery of capital and operational needs
  • Identifies, organizes and implements change initiatives that will propel UNITY HEALTH Laboratory standards, practices and procedures to the next level of service delivery
  • Attend and participate in operational, leaders’, staff and quality meetings
  • Assists in creating and implementing new departmental policies and procedures
  • Identifies and organizes internal and external learning needs for staff
  • Lead the continuous professional development of employees through training, coaching, counselling, competency assessments, annual performance management reviews and attendance management, and maintain appropriate documentation as required.
  • Orientates new staff to the department, ensuring staff are familiar with departmental policies, work schedules, code of conduct, standards of practice, etc.
  • Implements and oversees internal and external clinical trials and research projects
  • Facilitates molecular/cytogenetics testing for research studies
  • Assists with recruiting qualified staff, including reviewing resumes, participating in interviews and recommending candidates of choice
  • Maintains responsibility for organizing training for Technologists. Ensure resources and tools are available for training
  • Contributes to the budget and capital process
  • Monitors invoices for contracts and non-covered contract service
  • Implementing and ensuring Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare Accreditation (IQMH) standards are met
  • Implements quality improvement processes
  • Ensures incident reports are submitted by staff, as required, in a timely manner and assist in timely implementation of corrective action
  • Perform lab related investigations in a timely manner
  • Provide various LIS reports for the Division and participate in LIS upgrades when required. Computer skills required.
  • Aid residents and P.A. students with lab computer access when required and other issues that may arise within the scope of lab practice
  • Willing to travel between the St. Michael’s and St. Joseph’s hospital sites when required
  • Assist the Pathologists at both hospital sites with issues that arise within the laboratory.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of a recognized Certified Medical Laboratory Technologist Program required;
  • Current registration with C.M.L.T.O in the relevant discipline required
  • Undergraduate degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in pathology/cytology laboratory
  • Experience with quality management system, teaching and research
  • Proficiency and expertise in the specialty area
  • Knowledge in the creation and use of spreadsheets, database, word and excel documents
  • Knowledge of legislation which may affect operations
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with and ability to inspire team work
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent leadership and multitasking skills
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making skills
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate operational workload
  • Ability to work independently and make informed decisions
  • Ability to handle stress and conflict management in a professional and effective manner.
