Job Description

The Kidney and Metabolism Program (KMP) strives to provide optimum patient-focused care to all individuals that attend the Ophthalmology Offices. This results-oriented individual will insure that all day-to-day clinic activities run smoothly by working collaboratively within the Ophthalmology clinics at St. Michaels Hospital.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs patient workups and reports results to physician. Patient workups include: patient history, measuring near and/or distance visual acuity, pupillary assessment, lensometry and intra-ocular pressure measurement by applanation tonometry or tonopen, Amsler-grid testing, use of slitlamp to examine anterior segment, instillation of dilating drops. The candidate may also be required to perform ocular ultrasonography (Biometry and B scans), kerotometry, Corneal Topography (COT), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Goldmann and Humphrey Visual Fields Testing, Macular Function Assessments, colour vision assessments, Heidelberg Retinal Tomography (HRT). Preparation of surgical instruments for minor procedures.
  • May be required to perform additional tests, which include fundus photography, fluorescein angiography as well as ICG (Indocyanine Green Choroidal angiograms) photographs, external and colour photographs, slit lamp and anterior chamber photographs. This requires excellent communication skills, patience and technical skills with the equipment.
  • Explains purpose and procedures for tests to patients.
  • Documents test results.
  • Maintains patient records.
  • Maintains safe and therapeutic work environment.
  • Completes basic instrument and equipment maintenance; identifies problems and arranges repairs.
  • Orders supplies and helps to maintain equipment, e.g., cleans lenses, documents and sends instruments to MDR for reprocessing, changes bulbs, etc. and assists in the arrangement of servicing when necessary.
  • Provides optimum patient care, along with patient education, and demonstrates a professional manner in the work setting.
  • Research responsibilities including participation in research protocols in collaboration with the Ophthalmologist.
  • Attends conferences and seminars to improve skills, remains current and learns new techniques and how to use different equipment.
  • Participates in planning activities including evaluation of procedures and the physical environment with the Clinical Leader Manager and external clients.
  • Maintains accurate statistics.
  • Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduate of a post-secondary Ophthalmic Assistant program.
  • Certification with JCAHPO required. If not currently certified, must be eligible to write exam within 6 months of hire and proof of completion of education requirement for JCAHPO Certification required prior to start.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years recent ophthalmic experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent computer knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent customer/patient service.
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Flexible work hours required (early and/or late start/end times).
