The Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest has an opportunity forPHLEBOTOMIST RESEARCH ASSISTANTTemporary Full-Time (Approx.12 months)70 hours Bi-weekly | Non-UnionThe Anne and Allan Bank Centre for Clinical Research Trials in the Rotman Research Institute of the Academy for Research and Education at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care is seeking a Phlebotomist Research Assistant. The Centre for Clinical Research Trials is a multidisciplinary specialist unit, which has been set up to design, conduct, analyse and publish clinical trials and other studies. The Rotman Research Institute (RRI) is a premier interdisciplinary, international centre for the study of human brain function. Our core research themes are: Cognitive Neuroscience, Aging and Brain Health, Alzheimer’s and Related Diseases, Computational Modeling and Neuroinformatics. Our research focuses on cognitive brain functions (including memory, executive function, attention, perception, and language), both in normal aging and in the presence of diseases and conditions that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, stroke, and traumatic brain injury. The Rotman Research Institute supports behavioral, neuropsychological, neuroimaging, and neurocomputational studies with state-of-the-art facilities, including eye-tracking, electroencephalography, and magnetoencephalography laboratories and a research-dedicated Siemens 3 Tesla MRI in-house at Baycrest.Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct clinical trial visits with study participants in accordance with Good Clinical Practice and the approved research protocol.
  • Perform phlebotomy and collect capillary blood specimens as directed.
  • Perform processing, storage, and shipment of biological specimens and verify entry into the Electronic Data Capture (EDC)/Clinical Trial Management System (CTMS) system.
  • Documenting and packaging of study samples for shipment to the appropriate clinical diagnostic or analytical laboratory
  • Enter data accurately for sample preparation, collection, processing, storage/shipment, and analysis.
  • Implement pre-analytical procedures (e.g., centrifugation, aliquot, preparing smears, etc.).
  • Perform specific protocol assessments and procedures including interviewing study participants about medical history, investigational product compliance/reconciliation, and conducting assessments such as vital signs, EKG, height, weight, elbow breadth, frame size and body mass index, etc., accurately.
  • Monitor study participants during in-house confinement periods for protocol and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirement such as physical restrictions, water restrictions, meals, fluid intake/output, etc.
  • Prepare study related materials, such as labelling of study tubes, ensuring clipboards are available, and ensuring assessment room is prepared with required supplies
  • Review study documents for completeness and accuracy and ensure all corrections are followed up with promptly
  • Ongoing maintenance of essential trial files (electronic or otherwise).
  • Collaborate with CTU team to ensure that clinical research and related activities are performed in accordance with federal regulations and IRB/REB or other regulatory authority agency policies and procedures; ensure meeting Sponsor’s timelines and internal performance goals.
  • Assist in set up and maintenance of laboratory
  • Execute other duties as may be required.
Qualifications include but are not limited to:
  • Required: Phlebotomy certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Sciences preferred.
  • Preferred: CRO industry experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in clinical research.
  • Demonstrated IV catheter skills.
  • Accountable and accurate, with a strong sense of attention to detail.
  • Should be able to maintain confidentiality while handling important and private information while multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time management, organizational and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with other clinical team members as needed.
