Job Description

The Ministry of Energy is seeking a professional, career oriented individual to occupy a permanent position in their Electricity Policy, Economics and System Planning Branch .If you have energy sector knowledge and a background in economics, consider this exciting opportunityWhat can I expect to do in this roleYou will:

  • conduct research and system modelling relating to the demand, supply, and pricing of electricity in Ontario.
  • develop and present economic analysis and related policy proposals and advice.
  • develop and maintain contacts with stakeholders to exchange information, collect data for research studies, and provide expert advice.
  • prepare and present briefings, economic data/information, reports and tables on policy options, initiatives and recommendations to branch and ministry senior management.
How do I qualifyResearch and Analytical Skills:
  • You have knowledge of research and economic/statistical analysis principles and techniques, including economic/financial modeling, to plan/design complex research projects, to conduct complex qualitative/quantitative analysis and to develop comparative analysis of options, impacts, and best practices.
  • You have knowledge of optimization models and forecasting techniques to interpret/analyze key variables related to the dispatch of electricity resources.
Technical Knowledge:
  • You have knowledge of the theories, principles, and methodologies of economics and its application to the energy sector.
  • You have knowledge of policy development in the energy sector specifically related to the demand, supply, pricing and competitiveness of energy in Ontario.
  • You have knowledge of the operation of electricity markets in Ontario and neighbouring jurisdictions.
Evaluation and Decision Making Skills:
  • You are able to evaluate options and alternatives in terms of economics, cost analysis, practicality, impact on industry, competitiveness, and assessing conflicting views
  • You are able to identify and recommend economic, fiscal, regulatory policy/program options to branch and ministry senior management, while keeping in line with Ministry and Provincial strategic directions and objectives.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
  • You have communication skills to respond to issues, prepare reports, briefing materials and correspondence, and to represent the ministry on inter-jurisdictional task forces/working committees.
  • You have interpersonal and presentation skills to build working relationships with stakeholders and provide policy advice, explanations and program recommendations to senior management.
