Job Description

Job SummaryGEMINI is a hospital data and analytics collaborative based out of Unity Health Toronto. GEMINI collects routinely-generated clinical and administrative data from hospital information systems, and has developed an infrastructure for data cleaning, standardization and analysis supporting research and quality improvement efforts. GEMINI is by far the largest hospital clinical data research repository of its kind in Canada, holding data on millions of patient hospitalizations that cover ~50% of all medical and ICU patients in Ontario. The core GEMINI team is made up of approximately 30 individuals and is a highly dynamic and innovative place to work. Join us!Initially established as a collaboration between seven University of Toronto-affiliated hospitals, GEMINI is growing in 2021 to a network of 30+ hospitals across Ontario. Our research interests, and those of our partners, primarily span across three categories: a) clinical epidemiology, to better understand patient cohorts and prevalence of diseases; b) health services research, to measure processes of care, delivery of care, resource utilization, and costs of care delivery (health economics); and c) predictive analytics, through artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods to improve prediction of disease states, patient outcomes, and data processing. Equity and diversity related research is a core cross-cutting theme on all our research. GEMINI is also exploring into qualitative research with partner researchers on human factors and behavioural sciences in the context of general medicine delivery and patient care. Additionally, data linkage work with the Institute of Clinical and Evaluative Sciences (ICES) is underway to investigate out-of-hospital risk factors and outcomes.Recent GEMINI publications include 1) Descriptions of COVID-19 hospitalizations, care and outcomes (Verma et al., 2021 CMAJ), 2) Variations in Processes of Care and Outcomes for Hospitalized General Medicine Patients Treated by Female vs Male Physicians (Sergeant et al., 2021 JAMA Health Forum), and 3) Managing drug shortages during a pandemic: tocilizumab and COVID-19 (Verma et al., 2021 CMAJ). GEMINI’s data applications also support quality improvement efforts, which formed the basis of the Ontario General Medicine Quality Improvement Network (GeMQIN). For more information, please visit geminimedicine.caWe are seeking a recent PhD graduate (graduated within the last 3 years) who has advanced training in a health services relevant discipline, and has s analytical skills in the use of large clinical and administrative datasets or in descriptive surveys to study hospital care, resource use, and clinical outcomes related to COVID-19. Supervised by GEMINI’s co-Principal Investigators, Drs. Amol Verma and Fahad Razak, the successful candidate will be leading their own research project(s) using GEMINI data and providing mentorship to graduate students. Strong interpersonal and communication skills will be important for this role.This position is 12-month temporary full-time position with possibility of renewal (37.5 hours/week). In accordance with Unity Health Toronto’s Research Employment policies, a post-doctoral fellow will have entitled vacation days and be eligible to opt into a benefits and pension plan.Responsibilities & ActivitiesResponsibility Research Percentage of Time: 85%In addition to conducting your own research with GEMINI data, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Initiate new research projects, including planning and coordination, statistical analysis, and interpretation of study results
  • Prepare protocols, project proposals, and research ethics board applications
  • Draft manuscripts for publications in peer-reviewed journals in consultation with co-Principal Investigators, the GEMINI team, and other research collaborators
  • Revise manuscript drafts in response to reviewer and editor comments
  • Conduct quantitative data analysis, where appropriate, and coordinate analyses with other external organizations
  • Prepare datasets including calculating derived variables
  • Conduct literature reviews and other background research for publications
  • Assist/lead in the development and submission of grant applications with GEMINI’s co-Principal Investigators
Responsibility Managerial Percentage of Time: 15%
  • Support the training and supervision of students
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects, while monitoring their scope, timelines, and budgets
Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills
  • PhD in Clinical Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Applied Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Health Economics, or similar disciplines
  • Strong understanding of health system or services research concepts
  • Advanced knowledge in inferential statistics and data science, knowledge in clinical research/internal medicine is preferred
  • Experience with developing and submitting grants to research funding programs at the provincial and federal level is a strong asset
  • Experience working with large administrative and clinical datasets or in descriptive evaluations within the healthcare system
  • Knowledge in R, Python, Perl, and SQL is an asset
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner
  • Flexibility to adapt to a changing workload
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience using referencing software such as Endnote or Mendeley is an asset
  • Experience with statistical methods for risk adjustment is an asset
